An “All-Star” Caliber Experiment: The New NHL Format

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

I’d just like to take a minute give kudos to the NHL for their “outside the box” thinking in regards to the format of this weekend’s NHL All-Star Game in Raleigh, North Carolina.  This isn’t the first time that they have tweaked the format of their All-Star EXHIBITION game.  The NBA, NFL, and ESPECIALLY MLB should all take note.  Though it is my opinion that the NFL has the worst all-star game in professional sports, I singled out Major League Baseball because they TOTALLY dropped the ball when they made the results of an exhibition game the determinant for home field advantage in the most important set of games in the entire sport.

Over the years, the NHL has experimented with several different formats such as East vs West, USA vs the World, etc.  This year’s format may be the most interesting one yet from a fan’s perspective, and most of the excitement will take place before the first puck is ever dropped.

The fans have voted in 6 “starters” (3 forwards, 2 defensemen, 1 goalie) from both conferences.  The NHL then selected another 36 All-Stars, which will give each team 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 3 goalies when the teams are eventually set.  That pool of 42 players then nominated 6 of their peers to serve as captains for the two teams (1 captain and 2 alternates for each team).

Tomorrow (Fri, Jan 28) at 6pm, a televised Fantasy Draft will be held on the NHL Network, where the captains of each team will select their perspective rosters, with the order determined by a coin toss.  Then on Sunday (Jan 30), the selected teams will do battle.  I personally think this is a great format for and All-Star EXHIBITION.  Can you imagine if the NBA had a pick-up All Star Game?  Can you imagine if the NFL Pro-Bowl……..nevermind…….I don’t know what it will take for me to ever be interested in the Pro-Bowl again.  However, my advice to the other professional leagues is…TAKE NOTES…and remember, in the words of my Homie Duke from Rocky IV…”THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN EXHIBITION!”

"Throw the damn towel!!!"

My Thoughts on The Lock Outs

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

In The War Room I have been known to talk a lot of trash about people and I have received tweets and messages on The Book where people have called me a hater, and some have even said I don’t like anything. To quote the great poet Common “If I don’t like it I don’t like it don’t mean that I’m hating”!

At any rate instead of talking about what I don’t like, I have decided to talk about what I am thankful for in sports. I am thankful for David Stern and Roger Godell.

David Stern in my opinion is the greatest commissioner in all of sports. He transformed the NBA from a league full of angry drug addicts to an international game with many stars and memorable moments.

Roger Godell or as I sometimes call him King Roger or Dumbledore has taken control of the league and held players accountable for their actions both on and off the field. I respect him for that and I wish Bud Selig would grow some Gonads (No Mendenhall) and run his league with the same enthusiasm and stern hand.

I love both the NBA, and the NFL, but I am worried as both leagues are facing an impending lockout. Stern and Billy Hunter as well as Godell and Demaurice Smith need to make sure this doesn’t happen. I understand it is not that simple and I understand that changes need to be made, but no one wins if there is a lockout in either league. Especially the fans; the ones who pay their salaries.

If there is a lockout please don’t try to appease us by giving us scab players or any kind of shortened season. Trying to watch the NBA without the star players is like trying to watch Sanford and Son when Fred was on vacation in Saint Luis and Grady was the main character. No one wants to see that MR. Stern!

The same goes for the NFL. I do not want to see any scab players! Please no! That is like watching Martin Episodes where Gina wasn’t on the show. It was still Martin but it just wasn’t the same without Gina!

Don’t become like that jabroni Bud Selig who refuses to let Pete Rose in the hall of fame but allows his locker rooms to rival the biggest pharmacies in America when it comes to the availability of drugs. This idiot allowed a baseball strike, cancellation of The World Series, and allowed an all-star game to end in a tie. Bud Selig runs Major League Baseball as though he went to the Enron School of Business.

The bottom line is you guys have done a tremendous job running your leagues and now it is time to make sure you don’t throw it all away. Do whatever you have to; to make sure the fans have our Football and Basketball. If you do I personally promise to pay for you’re over priced NFL Sunday Ticket and NBA package.

I’m Nice!!!

Grow up DeSean

Dear DeSean Jackson:

Although I love that fact that you are probably the fastest thing on two legs and that you are an employee of my team, The Philadelphia Eagles, I would totally appreciate it if you grow up.  Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing bad about celebrating on the field when you’ve just ran, what 81, 91 yards for a touchdown, but seriously, the falling back in the end zone?  I mean seriously?  Just play the game.  Not too long ago you weren’t really doing anything on the field.  You dropped passes, missed routes, you even got called out by your coach.  Look, I love your explosiveness, I even love your attitude (even when it’s funky), but you need to calm down on the excessive celebration (which cost your team 15 yards) and get down to business.  It’s funny because I said to my boyfriend, “what happens if the defense goes out and gets an interception or a fumble and he’s over there on the sidelines needing oxygen, falling all over the ground?  What he is going to do then when he has to go back out there?”  Low and behold the defense does their job and gets a turnover.  Now you have to go out there gassed with rubber legs, all because you wanted to be a highlight on SportsCenter.  Well I’m here to tell you DeSean, you want to get big boy money then start acting like a big boy.

Brady's Mop

Dear Tom Brady:

Everybody else may be sniffing your jockstrap, but not me.  I don’t like you.  Sure you’re breaking records, yes you are probably going to win MVP, it’s most likely that you’ll even go to the Super bowl and win, because apparently the who’s who in the sports world think so.  Well I don’t care, I still don’t like you.  I don’t like your uniform, I don’t like your smile, and I don’t like your wife or even your silly haircut.  You have everybody else fooled, thinking you are the ultimate golden boy, but you can’t be this perfect, nobody is.  Yes I may just be angry because my team can’t have the amount of success that your team has, but I don’t care, I still don’t like you.  You may be the best there is, but I can’t jump on the wagon.  I won’t jump on the wagon.  Maybe it’s because you won’t cut that mop upon your head because your wife said so, but when you were thanking everyone under the sun after the Thanksgiving game against the Lions, you could barely remember you had one.  Or maybe it’s because you bitch and moan when a defender touches you with the tip of his finger.  I don’t know what it could be, but I just don’t like you.

There's no pouting in football Mark

Dear Mark Sanchez:

Pick yourself up off the floor, dust yourself off, look yourself in the mirror and say “I am a NFL Quarterback.”  You are on the verge of becoming a joke.  You know how many 23-year-olds would kill to be you?  Stop pouting and get your head in the game.  You have ups and you have downs, that’s how the game goes.  Sunday, versus the Dolphins, you looked so defeated and you did it to yourself.  Your teammates look to you to be a leader.  If you want to be considered an upper level QB, then you need to become the presence on the field that you’ve been conditioned to be.  No longer can you fall upon the sword of novice because you are now a veteran.  Look at your mistakes and learn from them or you will become just another overrated wanna be quarterback who never lived up to the hype.
