What You Hatin’ For?
Friday, March 25th, 2011Watching this current NBA season I have gained a new level of respect for Kobe Bean Bryant. Now I have always known he was a great player destined for the hall of fame but this season gave me a new perspective on just how mentally strong he is. In the words of my comrade PJ “Kobe has the body of a 50 year old!” What’s amazing to me is the way he deals with his injuries and stays focused on the big picture.
After the last lost to the Miami Heatles instead of just relaxing knowing he is a 5 time champion, he instead went to work on his shot after the game. Then after watching him get a sprained ankle I thought he would be out a least a week, considering Boozer just missed 5 games with the same injury, but he didn’t miss a game.
This in my opinion is what separates him from every other player in the league. Now I know all of the “King James” fans probably won’t read this entire post, but if you do I got love for you, and if you don’t Marshall Faulk You and go Cheddar Bob yourself!
The funny thing is, the more I recognize Kobe’s mental toughness he seems to get more hate. In the words of the legendary Philly rap crew Major Figgas “What you hatin’ for?” People in Philly say they hate him because “he disrespected the Sixers in their fans in the finals!” So What! Get over it! Then you have the Lebron fans who refuse to give him credit because in their words “Lebron makes his team better!” And Kobe doesn’t? Lmao!!!! Or they hit you with the “Kobe always had help and Lebron didn’t!” First off that’s just dumb, and I need people to start forming their own opinion and stop repeating nonsense they hear! Michael Jordan had a hall of fame running mate, Bill Russell had more than one hall of famer on his championship teams, when Wilt won titles he had hall of fame help, Dr J. had hall of fame help, Isiah had hall of fame help, and by this time you get the point and if not immediately go to the highest floor possible of wherever you are and jump right now! Another funny one is “He is arrogant!” Lmao! Name me one great player that isn’t arrogant. The hate gets so bad that after Kobe scored 42 pts in a triple overtime game I received an email with this pic attached.
I’m not just talking to Lebron fans. I have had this debate with Iverson fans, Vince Carter fans, T-Slack fans, D. Wade fans, and now Lebron fans. That brings up another point. All of the guys I mentioned at one point in time were “supposed” to be the best player in the league but there has been one constant during all this time and that has been Kobe.
There is a difference between being a great player and being a winner. Then there is a difference between being a winner and being champion. I consider myself a student of the game and when I look at the history of the game there were only a handful of players that had the mental toughness that made them a champion. Guys like Jordan, Russell, Bird, Magic, and Kobe. As great as Wilt was he didn’t care enough about the game. He had his mind on breaking the BYU honor code as many times as humanly possible. Wilt was a winner but Russell was a champion.
Now I know all the Kobe haters, if they are still reading at this point, are sick or saying hateful things about him and that’s expected. I too have had players I didn’t like. Most people think Jordan was the GOAT but I don’t and I also didn’t like his a$$ when he played. In fact I don’t like him to the point that I call him Thed. Thed is an acronym that stands for “The Hooped Earring Dude”. I didn’t like Thed to the point that I never owned a pair of Jordans. (I had to make an exception for the Jordan III’s and XI’s because those were as hot as fishgrease cooked on August 18th!) The difference is my hate for Jordan didn’t cloud my judgment when it came to his game. Mike was a monster and he was one of the greatest players to ever do it! He was still a cornball that wore a wack a$$ hoop earing.
My point is, because you don’t like Kobe for something that has nothing to do with basketball don’t judge his game based on that. I can understand not liking him but I hear Kobe detractors use that as the reasons why he isn’t the best playing or even a great player. Learn to separate your hate for the man from your judgment of him as a player. You have a chance to watch one of the greatest to ever do it, so appreciate it. Now for all the Kobe haters that made it this far; You may now start hating!!!
Shaq vs Yao! Who was better in their prime?
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011“The Worst Sports Fans in America”: Response to GQ Magazine
Monday, March 21st, 2011When, in a sane world, does meanness outweigh violence? What would you choose; snowballs or arson? Gentlemen’s Quarterly (more affectionately known as GQ) has once again placed an unflattering light on Philadelphia fans, naming them the worst in America. I love the byline calling us “The Meanest Fans in America”. Yet the third worst fans (West Virginia University) have a reputation for setting fires (1,120 blazes 1997-2003, as well as presently setting dumpster fires weekly) and the 13th worst fans (University of Wisconsin) throws bottles at little girls and sexually hazes their marching band.
What is so wrong with being mean? When did sports become so fluffy? Basically, you are telling me and my fellow Philadelphia fans that we should pay a small fortune to watch a game without expressing the slightest criticism. We should just sit there and coddle the egos of millionaire athletes when you can blatantly see they are not doing what they’re getting paid to do? Is this what you are telling us to do?
The first thing that the national media brings up when talking about Philadelphia is that we booed Santa and threw snowballs at him. Here are some facts that I think you should know before bringing that up yet again: This incident was over 40 years ago and The Philadelphia Eagles royally stunk. They were not booing Santa; they were booing the terrible performance by The Eagles. I was nowhere near being born in 1968, but I’m pretty sure I would have booed Santa too.
Let me give you a little perspective of what goes on in the mind of Philadelphia fans. We are losing badly, and you want to throw Santa Claus out there to do what?…make us feel better, forget that we are a horrible team? Surely you jest. My issue is that the organization at the time thought this would be a good idea.
As for Michael Irvin and his injury, I only have one thing to say. We didn’t know it would end his career. If we did, we wouldn’t have booed. We are not that heartless.
“Pukemon” (the vomiting incident) was the act of a young man who was being irresponsible with his alcohol content. It was crude and disgusting, and I am pretty sure that little girl is scarred for life, but that kid does not represent the fans of Philadelphia. The taser incident was some young kid trying to get his fifteen minutes of fame, so please don’t go overboard with this one.
I saw some of the other nominees for “worst fans” and I do not believe that we are the worst. We don’t set fires and we don’t maim or kill. What sports stadium doesn’t have an occasional fight or two? The problem with everyone outside of Philadelphia is they don’t understand the intense relationship we have with our sports teams. We live and die with them, so we expect nothing but the best from them. Quite frankly, GQ is a white collar magazine and this is a blue collar city. We don’t sit in a box seat sipping on scotch and smoking a cigar. We are out in the blistering cold and sweltering heat supporting our teams , hoping they can get us the golden goose.
Instead of sitting on your high horse casting your vote about something you have no idea about, you should get out there with us, sit amongst us and you might find that we aren’t such a bad city of fans after all.
Isiah Thomas: Not Again!
Friday, March 18th, 2011Now in the words of Amare Stoudemire “The Knicks are back” and that is primarily due to the decisions made by GM Donnie Walsh. He has completely revamped a roster that has been deplorable in recent history and for the first time in years the Knicks are like Charlie Sheen and they are “Winning”.
With that being said I constantly hear rumors that the Knicks owner regularly consults with former Knicks Coach/President Isiah Thomas and I’m baffled as to why he would do so. I can sit here and name several horrible decisions that Isiah made when running the Knicks but I will just say that Isiah traded for Eddy Curry.
Why is James Dolan still consulting him, and why are there rumors about him coming back to the Knicks. Even if it is not true Mr. Dolan should have said so. If it is true I believe Isiah has pictures of Mr. Dolan with a “low pro hoe that’s cut like an afro”. There is no other logical explanation as to why Isaih would still have anything to do with the Knicks in any capacity. The Knicks were so bad under Isaih that I would rather watch Jodeci perform on The Varnell Hill Show then to watch Isiah’s teams play. So Mr Dolan do me and all of N.Y. a favor and cut it the hell out!!!
I’m Nice!!!
