What is it about women and gossip? As soon as we hit puberty we enjoy this “epic” female-kind pastime. Just a bunch of women without a care in the world, trading negative talk about others while giggling and enjoying themselves to no end. But is it harmless fun? Or is there more to gossip than just talk and giggles?
We all know that bullying is wrong and can lead to some serious consequences such as death, but when we take the two genders and compare them, we find that women (girls) prefer the more covert form; emotional as opposed to physical. Emotional bullying takes the form of rumors and gossip spreads by those the victim consider friends and acquaintances, or those dubbed by pop culture as “haters”, and the instigator is usually someone very close to the victim. So the question I was asked was: “can haters and their gossip affect one’s health?” Well you bet your ass they can! Elaine from Seinfeld once said, “boys would give each other a wedgie, and girls will tease someone till they develop an eating disorder”. Bullying by females is so hard to detect, therefore hard to combat, which makes its effects even more severe. But what is it that compels women to gossip, is it biology or how we’re brought up? What makes us the judge of others’ lives and their choices, and deem them unacceptable? Well I think the answer to that could be a long dissertation by some psychology/sociology grad student…it’s way above my pay grade. However, a point that is worth noting is that female aggression is closely related to abuse and trauma suffered at home, so in this case the perpetrator is also a victim, and nurture obviously plays a big role here.
Women tend to employ passive aggressive behavior in their attacks, unlike men who would use a fist to solve their problems, so we could call that biology then. They would form a clique of friends a là the movie Mean Girls, and torment their victim by way of spreading vicious rumors that would eventually lead to the destructions of the reputation of their “frenemy”. They would feel a sense of superiority over their “subject” and set out to “out” her “bad behavior” to the masses. They truly believe that they are in the right, so can we blame some kind of mental disorder here? It is safe to say that the aggressors might suffer from negative self-concept, body image issues, and poor relationships ties (Canadian Mental Health, 2009). The victim, of course, is not getting away without a scratch here (meow, no pun intended). She might fall into depression, develop eating disorders, her relationships will deteriorate, and in some worse but real instances, take her own life. Yeah this is some serious stuff, so gossiping is not so harmless after all is it?
So what can we do to eliminate this kind of ill behavior? First, remove yourself. If you find yourself participating in this is sort of thing, stop and repeat this; “happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”- Mahatma Gandhi. Be mindful of what you say. Your words can be deadly. Gossiping can rob you of your own happiness, not to mention, destroy another’s life. Try to address the underlying emotional issues that compel you to do this. Research has shown that most women who participate in gossip are victims of abuse, whether as children at the hands of their parents or as adults in unhealthy romantic relationships. (Canadian Mental Health 2009). You are the solution. If you see your friends/family take part in this, be vocal! Call them out on it! Educate them! Let them know how dangerous this behavior is. Hell, start an intervention if you must. Friends don’t let friends gossip! Assess the connection that you have with said person and see if you can build and better that relationship. They might be hurt, suffering, or feeling neglected and that why they are resorting to this behavior. Also find better things to do. Engage in new hobbies, maybe even join a gym (yep you knew that fitness plug was coming, didn’t you?)
If for whatever reason beyond your control, you have to gossip, well then why don’t you engage in positive gossip? Compliment someone in their absence, whether by stating what wonderful act they have committed, how beautiful they are, or how their mere company delights you, and remember, “strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and weak mind discuss people”. Don’t be weak-minded!!!

WRS Book Review – Sugar Ray Leonard: The Big Fight

I always find it amusing when people judge an athlete’s performance based on how they feel about them as a person. I mean I get it, but it still makes no sense. You can be a horrible human being and allegedly kill your ex-wife and her friend, get acquitted, and later be sent to prison for robbing someone of your own belongings. That does not mean you were not one hell of a running back. What does that have to do with Sugar Ray Leonard and his book you ask? Well before reading this book I had a picture of Sugar Ray that has completely changed. Before starting this book I always looked at Ray Leonard (I’m not going to keep calling that man Sugar, Yo!) as a member of the Abnegation faction but now I see him as a member of the Dauntless faction. If you’ve never read the Divergent books or seen the movie, that last sentence will make no sense to you; but if you have, you will recognize my genius.
I’ve read a lot of athletes’ memoirs and boxers seem to be the most transparent and have the most interesting stories. Then again, someone who makes a living trying to hurt another human being while also taking punishment from said human being has got to be off their rocker to begin with. Mike Tyson has set the bar in terms of being transparent and having an amazing story, so Ray Leonard’s book had a lot to live up to. Although Ray Leonard’s book was released first, I read the Tyson book first. This is no Tyson story but it is interesting in its own way (S/O to Todd Bridges for inspiring Ray Leonard to tell his story). I grew up in the Tyson era so I knew of many of his hardships and troubles. My opinion of Ray Leonard before this book was of someone who was articulate, athletic, marketable, a nice guy who happened to be a pugilist specialist (No Bosh). My brother B. Austin believes that Ray Leonard is overrated in terms of his boxing ability and I’ve always disagreed. One thing we’ve always agreed on is his image. That image has been shattered by his honesty in this book where he speaks about faking blackouts to make weight, sexual assault, drug abuse, and his obsession with finding “talent” in various cities for the purpose of fornication. A lot of time is spent discussing how he disrespected his first wife and how he was addicted to intercourse with all types of women. Don’t get me wrong, all men love yoni (unless you live an alternative lifestyle, and if you do, God bless you) but boxers seem to be bigger addicts then most of us.
There are also parts of this book that make you appreciate Ray Leonard as a pugilist. It’s obvious how serious he took his sport and how he strategized before fights. It’s also great to hear the respect he has for his fellow boxers, especially the men with whom he had his classic bouts. Another part of the book that made me appreciate Ray Leonard the athlete was how serious he took self-improvement and wanting to be a well-rounded person. He worked on his speech and image. He also talked about how many Blacks considered him a “sell-out” because he was well spoken. I can relate to that. Many of us have self-hatred that goes back to slavery and how systematically we were made to see ourselves as inferior (I won’t get into that now). I remember I was once called spoiled because I knew who both of my parents were (WTF?).
After reading this, I have a completely different idea of who Ray Leonard is/was. I respect him for being open and honest about his life even though he doesn’t come off as the good guy at all. We live in a world where everyone is judgmental and wants to hold people to higher moral standards than we do ourselves. I’ve also read athletes’ biographies where they talk about their life as if they did no wrong and they are the perfect person (S/O to Shaq), and we all know that’s unrealistic and a bunch of cow dung. I would recommend this book to all sports fans, especially people who are fans of the “sweet science”. Ray Leonard may not be the man he was marketed to be but he is brutally honest and maybe someone can learn something from his story. I doubt it though, because “The Nookie” has been making men do stupid things since the beginning of time, and some things never change.
Philadelphia Eagles OT Lane Johnson suspended for first four games of season

The suspension of Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson for violating the NFL’s drug policy was announced by the league on Wednesday.
The NFL announced that Johnson would be suspended for the first four games of the 2014 regular season. He will return to the Eagles’ roster on Monday, September 29 following the team’s game a day earlier against the San Francisco 49ers. The Eagles said via a statement issued on Wednesday,
“We’re very disappointed to learn of his suspension. We have spoken to Lane about the details of the suspension. He understood what he did wrong and took full responsibility. The key for him, however, is to learn from that mistake and move forward with his preparation for the 2014 season.”
The move was widely speculated by reporters almost a month ago but received no official comment from the league or the team until now.
The issue occurred when Johnson took an undisclosed prescription medication without clearing the drug with Eagles trainers. The second-year offensive lineman expressed remorse and regret about his actions, which will have a heavy impact on the team:
“In April while training, I mistakenly and foolishly put a prescribed medication in my body to help with a medical issue. I mistakenly failed to clear it with Eagles trainers and check the NFL list of banned substances. I am extremely sorry for this mistake and I will learn from it and be smarter in the future.
I would like to sincerely apologize to Mr. Lurie, Howie Roseman, Coach Kelly and his staff, my teammates and our amazing Philadelphia Eagles fans. This will be very hard on me to not be battling with my teammates for four games – but I will be ready and better than ever when I return.”
The suspension of the Eagles’ 2013 first-round draft pick is a deep disappointment to the team, heading into its second season under head coach Chip Kelly and looking to build on last year’s success. Johnson’s progression from a rookie to a more seasoned player is one of the more anticipated storylines of the 2014 season. The suspension, which will mean that Johnson will miss games against the Jaguars, Colts, 49ers, and first divisional matchup against the Redskins, will mean make the scrutiny and expectations for his growth that much more intense.

What Happens After Floyd Mayweather?

Floyd “Money” Mayweather is one of the most polarizing people, not only in the sport of boxing, but in sports period. He, in my opinion, has single handedly allowed the sport of boxing to remain relevant. Since Mike Tyson, no other fighter has accumulated as much money, notoriety, and casual fan attention besides Mayweather. With that being said, “What Happens After Floyd Mayweather”?
There are hundreds of boxers all over the world but are there any up and coming fighters that possess the skill and theatre quality that Mayweather brings to each fight/show? Besides Ali, no one in the fight business can promote a fight like “Money” Mayweather, which is why he makes more cash than any athlete in the world. Mayweather has a unique relationship with fans, many hate him and many love him. I’m pretty sure there are fight fans who order Mayweather fights to see if some fighter will finally shut him up. Which again I ask, What Happens After Mayweather? There were so many candidates who were supposed to be ready to take the place of Mayweather but have not succeeded to keep their star or win loss record in a positive state. Though undefeated is hard to go against, none of the present fighters have the charisma that Mayweather has, nor his work ethic. Prime example, Adrien Broner, who was almost anointed next to take Mayweather’s throne as pound for pound king, until he was embarrassed by Marcos Maidana. Andre Ward, to many, has been pinpointed to match Mayweather in skill and an undefeated record, but lacks the crossover appeal that Mayweather has to sell pay-per-view. Saul Alvarez had a shot but Mayweather out-classed him in their bout on 9/14/2013. Gernady Golovkin has a shot to be a special figure in boxing but he needs to have more meaningful fights to get anywhere near where Mayweather is ranked. “What Happens After Mayweather”? Even if he loses his next bout vs Marcos Maidana scheduled for 9/14/2014, is it safe to say that “Money” Mayweather has been boxing’s “savior” for the last decade?
So who will be the next money-making fighter to bring about paydays as Mayweather did? Andre Ward and Gernady Golovkin have the chance to really do numbers but neither will have formidable foes to make their careers have more relevancy. Who is out there that these two can really face to pose any threat to their undefeated records? Will Ward ever show a more promotional side or will he remain the clean-cut, boring nice guy we like but not love or love to hate? Not saying it’s bad to be clean-cut but boring is not good for business. Mayweather’s fights are not the most exciting, usually because he has already won the fight mentally before the event begins. Floyd “Money” Mayweather may be the last of his kind. “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Ali, Roy Jones Jr, Mike Tyson, Oscar De la Hoya, etc. Boxers should see these next 2-3 years as an opportunity to make their own case for “What Happens after Floyd Mayweather”. Will the sport stay afloat or will it decline even more?

Mickey Factz: 740 Park Avenue Album Review

There are certain artists that I support every time they release a project. Mickey Factz makes that list and before you question that, let me explain why. In my honest opinion he made one of the best projects in the last decade with Mickey Mause, which was released in 2012. That album IMO is a classic and it was an example of someone painting pictures with their words. The two albums after Mickey Mause which were #Y, and #Ynot were dope albums but not as great artistically as Mickey Mause. This leads me to this new project, 740 Park Avenue.
I watched a documentary on Netflix called “Park Avenue” and also read a book by Michael Gross titled “740 Park: The Story of the World’s Richest Apartment Building”,so I was wondering where he was going with the title, considering the first song I heard from the project was “Detroit Red”. The album starts by explaining the address of 740 Park Avenue and its wealth, but then it juxtaposes the residents’ situation to families that live close by as well as the life of the doorman who works at the apartment. This is where it gets interesting.
I’m the type of Hip-Hop fan that pays attention to not only beats and lyrics, but also the themes, cohesiveness, and the order of tracks on a project. I love how this album starts with the doorman explaining how he has to make a resident aware of who Malcolm X is, which leads right into Detroit Red. Factz is a well-rounded emcee who has the ability to make concept songs, just spit crazy bars such as the song “Still Better Than You”, but I think he is at his best when telling a story such as Detroit Red. Other songs that stand out are “7-13-82 – 2-29-14”, “Just This Last Time”, “13th Disciple” and “.14”.
There are many emcees who just spit bars or talk tough and that’s cool, but it gets boring. One thing I love about this project is that it’s not boring. There are lighter songs that Factz still spits crazy on, but have an R&B feel to them such as “Smoke Screen”, “Just This Last Time”, and “NeS”. “NeS” is a dope concept song that I have listened to on repeat. BTW, I thought I was the only one who noticed how thick Chun Li’s thighs were on Street Fighter.
Another track that stands out is “Huxtables”. When it comes to appreciating some songs, it’s about how you relate and I completely relate to this song. I also was heavily influenced by the Cosby Show as well as A Diff’rent World. In fact I wanted to go to an HBCU just because of A Diff’rent World, and that’s how I ended up at Lincoln University. Eventually, I had to leave Lincoln University because I was also influenced by Mobb Deep and the Infamous album, but that story is for another day.
This is a dope ass project but there is one song I dislike and that’s “Iont Care”. I can’t stand the song. I don’t like the flow or the beat and I don’t get how it fits in with the narrative. When I’m vibing to the album, this song just confuses me. It’s like when I look for Netflix these days and I forget they changed the logo to white. (WTF did they do that for?). I get the same feeling when I hear this song. It pisses me off but then I realize it’s the only song I dislike and the rest of the content is dope. The white logo pisses me off but then I realize I still have dope content.
This project is easily the best project from Factz since Mickey Mause and it will be a strong contender to make my list at the end of the year for best projects. It didn’t move me the way the Mickey Mause project did but then again not too many albums from anyone have, with maybe the exception of Pharoah Monche’s PTSD. (As you can see I love concept albums). Bar for bar, not too many emcees can deal with Factz in terms of wordplay, metaphors, and storytelling, but what makes his music standout is his ability to use those skills while making great songs (No Canibus). I also appreciate each project having a theme as opposed to just dropping fifteen songs with someone just rambling about whatever comes to mind.
This project is a must download for my true hip hop fans that appreciate the art.
