The average fan watches football and enjoys the action the hard hitting (II) all of the excitement and believes that NFL football is the greatest sport. It has become America’s favorite sport. But from and existentialist point of view I believe that Pro football is a great game but there are certain rules that sometimes ruin an entire game.
Rarely will you hear me say NCAA college football has it right considering how many things I personally believe they do wrong. But watching football over the past couple of weekends has made me realize they have at least one thing right, and that is the penalty for defensive pass interference.
In the college game the offense gets 15 yards and an automatic first down on defensive pass interference. When you juxtapose that rule with the pro game you will see what I mean. In the NFL when a defensive player is called for pass interference the offensive team not only gets an automatic 1st down but they get the ball at the spot where the interference took place. THAT’S A JOKE!!
There is a problem with how the NFL handles pass interference on so many levels. First off wide receivers are so much bigger than cornerbacks these days (II). And the rules are in favor of the wide outs due to changes in the game. Not only that but these 40 and 50 yard pass interference penalties are causing teams to lose games. Most of the calls made by the officials are subjective anyway; I mean if they wanted to, they could call holding on almost every play.
With that being said, games shouldn’t be loss due to bogus Pass Interference calls. A couple weeks ago I saw my own Broncos get a 49 yard Pass interference call that helped them win the game. A 49 yard penalty? Seriously? Well I guess it’s only right that yesterday my Broncos lost a game to the Jets due to a bogus pass interference call on fourth down.
If I were a struggling offense I would just throw the ball up and force the zebras to make a call. This current rule is deplorable! I understand the NFL’s need for scoring but for the biggest plays of the game to be pass interference calls is asinine. I just hope a playoff game or super bowl doesn’t get decided on a pass interference call. If it does just remember you heard me complaining on 10/18/10. With all that being said it could be worse. They could be like NBA refs.

Since I’m a die hard Philly fan who no longer lives in Philadelphia, I find myself CONSTANTLY defending my Philly Fan brethren against what has always SEEMED TO BE constant and blatant media exaggeration. Exaggeration that fans in other cities eat up with one of those big wooden spoons that used to hang on your momma’s kitchen wall back in the day. The attitudes of Philly Fans, the violence, the intimidation, the so-called unprovoked booing and turning on our athletes, etc has all been embellished over the years to the point of legend. And yes, admittedly, many of us OWN the legend, the myth, the lore, because 1) It has some truth to an EXTENT and 2) It’s sometimes fun to be PERCEIVED as the bully on the block…the Gooch….Biff…Nelson Muntz…you get the point. But hearing sports media figures CONSTANTLY crap on my city’s fans, and bringing up the same old HALF-TOLD, overly-exaggerated stories from 30 and 40 years ago to make their points, is starting to get a tad bit old…and it is starting to weigh on me heavily. If I hear that we threw snowballs at Santa Claus ONE MORE TIME without hearing the actual TRUE 1968 back-story, I’m gonna snap. First of all jackasses, Santa Claus doesn’t exist. People speak of this day as if the jolly, white-bearded, red-cheeked saint is a real person. Second of all…forget it. Use your fancy Google machines and look up the REAL story for yourselves.
Nowadays, Philadelphia sporting events are so heavily scrutinized that EVERY little ballpark incident is reported as national news. The whole city ALWAYS shares in the reputation of the “few”. I’ve been to stadiums and arenas all across the country (41 to be exact) and one outside the country (if you count The Colosseum in Rome), and the same behavior goes on EVERYWHERE I go. As a matter of fact, many times I think much of this behavior is a result of “other fans” having Philly fans in their house. I think they feel the need to “act like us” just to show us that they are just as tough as we are and that their house can be just as intimidating as ours. You wouldn’t believe how many fans I’ve seen play themselves way out of position trying to show off to the guy in the Phillies t-shirt or Eagles jersey. But in these cases, the entire city doesn’t get labeled after every dust up in the stands and these incidents hardly make the nightly news. It seems as if outsiders have always been envious of the passion we display towards our sports teams. MOST of us are all about immovable loyalty to our TEAMS, so excuse us if we occasionally move on emotionally from non-performing, overpaid athletes or athletes who either NEVER HAVE or NO LONGER fit the mold of the city in general.
I find it hilarious how the national media and the sheep that hang onto their every word were so shocked to see Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb get a standing ovation upon his return to Philly. Anyone who expected anything less doesn’t really know Philadelphians. And even though the fans did “the right thing”, they still couldn’t get credit. I read articles the day after implying that the standing ovation was probably a direct result of the fans knowing that the eye of the sports nation was on them that day. I have a question…When ISN’T the eye of the sports nation on Philly fans? And when have we ever changed our behavior to satisfy the masses? Stop blindly believing the myths. Stop allowing sports media talking heads to shape your opinions about stuff they weren’t even there to see. Stop being legend-whores. Go find out for yourselves and stop believing everything Michael Wilbon tells you. Come to a game in Philly and hang out with us. And if you act right, maybe we won’t beat yo ass up!

If you have listened to previous episodes of The Greatest Marshall Faulking Sports Internet Talk Show then you know on Pass The Rock I have talked about athletes being allowed to get away with moral transgressions due to their superior athletic abilities. Because of this they continue to make bad decisions and end up in the spotlight for many things other than sports. It seems as though these days the sports section of the news has more scandal than gossip magazines. There seems to be just as many athletes on TMZ’s website as there are on ESPN’s website.
I had a conversation with a friend about athletes and their legal trouble, as well as which athletes give back to the community and I made a statement talking about athletes being role models. He disagreed and believes athletes are not role models, but they are just individuals who have been blessed with superior athletic ability which does not make them role models.
I completely disagree. I know many people will disagree with my opinion but I believe love it or hate it ATHLETES ARE ROLE MODELS! Many athletes are quick to say they are not role models but when they try to sell us any product that agrees to pays them they have no problem with crafting a certain image.
Remember Nike told us to “BE LIKE MIKE.” Many wanted to be like Mike although Mike lined his own pockets while ignoring many social issues he could have spoke on due to the platform he had and still has. (Had to take a shot at Mike.. lol)
The term role model generally means any “person who serves as an example, whose behavior is emulated by others”. The fact of the matter is kids will want to emulate their favorite athlete. Whether we like it or not and THAT IS A FACT!
We are part of the problem. We as a society put emphasis on many of the wrong things these days. Some of us who are adults still act like children and look up to athletes, movie stars, and musicians. We need to stop praising these people and start praising the individuals that really make a difference in our society. Kids used to look up to doctors, lawyers, teachers, firemen, and police officers. These are the individuals that make a difference and we as adults need to praise them.
I remember as a kid Charles Barkley having a commercial saying emphatically “I AM NOT A ROLE MODEL!” What’s funny about this is I have heard many athletes referencing Barkley’s commercial when saying themselves that they are also not a role model. All that shows me is they were watching Barkley as though he was their role model.
James Baldwin once said “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.” If we want the next generation to stop looking at athletes as their role models than maybe we should do the same.

Fantasy sports has been one of the fastest growing entities in the sports world over the past decade. It is no longer just a game for the fans, as the actual athletes themselves partake as well. It is a GREAT medium for the “numbers don’t lie”/“stats are the gospel” contingency and it often makes fans with average sports knowledge feel like geniuses. We all love fantasy sports, but fantasy sports have long left so-called “die-hard” fans in a twist. This is not to bash the rest of you because I myself am a self-proclaimed fantasy guru, but due to the interest conflicting nature of the games, I have always had some steadfast rules that even I myself have begun to break. Let’s take fantasy football for instance. To prevent myself from rooting for too many players and teams I have no business rooting for, I usually try to limit myself to one league per year…the Gridiron Gentlemen’s Club league, presented by WarRoom Sports & Philadelphia Auto Design (yeah…shameless plug, so what). I have broken this rule occasionally but it is usually as a favor to another league commissioner and I only put about 2% of the time and effort into those leagues that I put into my own. Being a fanatic Philly fan, I DO NOT draft Cowgirls, Deadskins, and Midgets to my teams UNLESS it is strictly for trade bait. Ok…I’ve had the occasional NY Midget, which is blasphemy in Philly, but the Midgets just aren’t as bad to me, probably because I live in the Washington DC area with Skins fans, which would make any outsider hate that team; and let’s face it, WE ALL hate the Cowboys. Well folks…I’m sad to announce that due to the extension of the league this year, the talent pool was VERY thin, so I have committed a cardinal sin. Yes…with the 18th pick in the first round, I selected Tony Romo as my quarterback. **In my crying T.O. voice**…”That’s my quarterback”.
I am a 2-time champion (in 5 years) and 2-1 thus far this season, but it is getting impossible for me to enjoy fantasy sports because there is NO WAY I can bring myself to root for certain players and certain teams to do well. It has also begun to ruin my NFL Sundays, because fantasy sports force you to watch games differently. The constant computer score checking is NOT how football Sundays were intended to be enjoyed. It’s becoming too much of a job. This brings me to those of you out there who play in 3, 4, 5, even up to 6 leagues at once. How is football even fun to you guys anymore? Where’s the excitement in rooting for the WHOLE LEAGUE to do well at once? How do you even feel good about winning one league when you undoubtedly had to root for AND against your players at the same time? How is this not the greatest conflict of interest in the history of sports? How can you call yourselves Packers fans while rooting for the Bears defense to shut down their opponents? How can you call yourselves Colts fans while rooting for Chris Johnson to shred your defense so you can win a computer game? How do you people even sleep with yourselves at night? Fantasy games have RUINED die-hard sports fandom here in the United States! We need a new hobby! But until we get one, keep joining our Fantasy Leagues so Ican keep winning your money.

Is Michael Vick really an improved QB or is he just taking advantage of weak opposition? Vick’s currently brandishing (II) some very gaudy statistics over 2 and a half games:* 110.2 QB Rating
* 7 Total TD’s
* 750 Yards Passing
* 60.7 Completion Percentage
* 170 Yards Rushing
* And most importantly 0 INTERCEPTIONS! I ask you, is Michael Vick the real deal? Or are these impressive stats just a product of awful competition? You make the call…

Does the NCAA really believe that eligibility is a more punishable offense than DWI’s, Assaults, Stalking, or any of the offenses committed by the University of Florida players. When you juxtapose the situation in USC and The University of Florida do you really believe that USC should be punished? That is a joke!!
The problem is the special treatment given to great athletes. Outstanding athletes, especially on the collegiate level are allowed to get away with pretty much anything because of their talents. No one holds them accountable for questionable morals as long as they help schools make millions of dollars. By the time these athletes get to the professional level these behaviors are exposed. The amalgamation of their fame and the amount of money they are paid only adds fuel to the fire. Two hours at a rookie symposium does not erase 21 years of ignorant behavior. At the professional level, players get fined, suspended, cut or traded for behavior that is not new. How do they expect these boys to become men and show good judgment when their behavior has been allowed for years? These moral transgressions have been allowed for years and now the organizations and the fans expect them to magically disappear. That won’t happen. More than likely they will end up like Braylon Edwards.
