With the hire of Ed Marynowitz, Chip Kelly got his man.

With the hire of Ed Marynowitz, Chip Kelly got his man.

Chip Kelly got his man. On Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles named Ed Marynowitz as vice president of player personnel.

Marynowitz has been with the team since 2012, when he worked  as the team’s assistant director of pro scouting. He  was promoted one year later to assistant director of player personnel. During his overlapping tenure with Marynowitz, Kelly became acquainted with the new VP’s skill set – and liked what he saw.

Via the team’s press release about the news, Kelly said,

“Ed is someone who has really impressed me going back to my interview process with the Eagles two years ago. He’s very bright, detailed, organized and his vision was aligned with what we want to accomplish. I spoke with a lot of people outside of our organization over the past few weeks and in the end, Ed was the most impressive.”

“I can’t tell you how well thought of Ed is in the scouting business. What many people in the football community told me matched exactly what I thought of him from Day One.”

Can the move help to repair what was viewed by all accounts as a toxic situation in the Eagles front office due to owner Jeffrey Lurie’s relationship with former GM Howie Roseman? Former team scout Louis Riddick, now with ESPN, was no holds-barred in a radio interview on Friday when speaking of Roseman, the Eagles front office, and the Marynowitz hire.

“He has been a constant there through a lot of the change,” Riddick said of Roseman. “It’s no secret. I don’t think him and I will be sharing any Christmas cards anytime soon. Ed Marynowitz is in there now. He’s a quality dude. He comes from a great, great football background as far as the people he’s been around.”

“Chip Kelly is someone who I have admired from afar. I’ve been able to talk to people who really know him, know what he thinks, knows what he believes in. If him and Ed can get on the same page, I think it could be a great, great thing … I know Ed. I worked with Ed for a year. I know what he thinks.”

Marynowitz’ hire is the result of the release of Tom Gamble and the ensuing power struggle between Kelly and Roseman for ultimate supremacy.  All eyes will be on the team to see if the move will help Kelly and the Eagles to better evaluate talent and, ultimately, get the Eagles closer to a playoff win and a run at the game we will all be watching tomorrow.

NBA Quick Takes: Southwest Division Dominance!

January 28th, 2015

by Kamal Hylton

Kamal Hylton Blog

Hello War Room Nation!

This is Kamal Hylton of NBA Nation Australia and War Room Sports blog back with your weekly dose of NBA Quick Takes.

This week’s column has a distinct Southwestern flavor to it, taking a look at the association’s toughest group of teams in the Southwest Division. Consisting of the Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, defending champion San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Pelicans, all you have to do is watch some of the divisional games and it’s clear there’s no sign of weakness.

They beat up on each other nightly and this only helps them develop a tough skin for when the playoffs roll around, matching up with any of these teams will be a tough test when we get down to the nitty-gritty. Looking at the standings we could be witnessing a rare feat of having an entire division make the playoffs, the only team really in doubt are the New Orleans Pelicans fighting to squeeze into the Top 8.

This leads me perfectly into my first Quick Take.

Pelicans Playoff Bandwagon

Since they’re not on national TV often, I’m not sure how often a lot of you watch the Pelicans play but when things are going well they’re one of my “League Pass teams” and a fun bunch to watch. I’ve watched quite a few of their games (including covering them once for NBA Nation Australia when they played the Toronto Raptors) and they are very underrated, showing resiliency and fight. A perfect example of this was on Sunday night, witnessing them go toe-to-toe on League Pass against the division foe Dallas Mavericks and coming away with a 109-106 victory on a key defensive stop by Anthony Davis. This is a team I want to see under the bright lights of playoff basketball.

TE

Even in the absence of star point guard Jrue Holiday, who’ll hopefully be returning from injury soon, they’ve had great performances by others holding down the fort. The main man in this regard has been Tyreke Evans, efficiently providing scoring punch and back court leadership. Evans has reinvented himself slightly from his Sacramento Kings days, showing an ability to guard multiple positions, be much more team oriented, and still have the capability to take over a game when called upon. Coach Monty Williams and the front office should also be given credit, securing two very strewed moves by adding Omer Asik in the offseason and the recent acquisition of Quincy Pondexter. Both have helped ease the burden on Davis defensively, Asik giving him a partner down low that will do the “dirty work”, allowing Davis to play his more natural power forward position (something he couldn’t do last season) while Podexter helps on perimeter defense. These players along with others like Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson are helping this team compete, but the main reason why I’m jumping on the Pelicans Playoff Bandwagon is to see the next stage of Davis’ development. He has quickly become one of the league’s dominant bigs, but we as NBA fans should hope he doesn’t get stuck in purgatory of a losing franchise (something his fellow University of Kentucky alum is experiencing in Sacramento).

Embrace Grit and Grind Basketball

Another team that doesn’t get much attention, despite being second in the Western Conference, are the Memphis Grizzlies. Most fans aren’t flicking through League Pass and landing on the Grizzlies, nor do they have the same “wow factor” as other teams. They aren’t nearly as exciting as those Golden State Warriors with their up tempo style and the “Splash Brothers” raining threes at the “Roaracle”, or as flashy as the Los Angeles Clippers high-flying act known as “Lob City”, but in its own way the style known as “Grit and Grind” basketball is a beautiful thing to watch.

Memphis

This team is built for the playoffs, displaying a defensively focused mindset that is anchored by its two bigs, Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. They take pride in stifling offenses, clog the lane, forcing bad shots, getting into the passing lanes, and being cerebral in half court sets. Grit and Grind is more than that though, it’s hard-nosed perimeter defense by players like Tony Allen, high basketball IQ from its point guard Mike Conley, and contributions from unheralded players.

Watching last night’s game against the Mavericks displayed just how deep this team can be, as they had players like Courtney Lee, Nick Calathes, and Beno Udrih step up seamlessly in the absence of Allen and Conley sidelined with injuries. Lee and Calathes combined for 5-for-7 from beyond the arc and Udrih managed the game without playing beyond himself, proving the system works and makes players better.

#TooMuchMonta

Do yourselves a favor the next time you watch the Dallas Mavericks, watch the effortless way Monta Ellis can take over a game. He has always had this ability, but this time it’s different. As mentioned on the latest episode of Court Vision, on War Room Sports TV, Ellis is showing that he has grown up from those bad Warriors and is far more efficient.

I recently wrote an article for NBA Nation Australia (http://nbanationaustralia.com/dallas-mavericks-masterminding-a-championship-contender-in-big-d/) on the Mavs masterminding a championship contender and my thoughts are now confirmed, that although Dirk Nowitzki is the face and leader of this Mavs team, Ellis’ role has arguably become much more important. During key stretches of tight games it’s the Jackson, Mississippi native that has the ball in his hands, his teammates knowing that he’s the first option on a pick and pop with Nowitzki.

ME

This is in no small part due to coach Rick Carlisle putting the ball in his hands and giving him the confidence and responsibility to create while at the same time not overburdening. Enter Rajon Rondo. While most people were quick to say a Rondo/Ellis back court wouldn’t work I was on the opposite side (if you don’t believe me you can check my Twitter timeline). It’s still early, and it won’t be truly tested until playoff time, but having a player like Rondo buy into Carlisle’s system has been essential. With two legit threats in the backcourt, it becomes a “pick your poison” situation for opposing defenses and Ellis has been the major beneficiary so far. At times he becomes too much to handle, which has led me to adopt the hashtag #TooMuchMonta.

I borrowed this from Nowitzki’s line in this Mavs parody video of Run DMC’s ‘Can’t Be Stopped’.

WHY I HATE THE PATRIOTS AND THE “MY BOYS” SYNDROME

January 23rd, 2015

(Image via BleacherReport.com)

I hate the Patriots…….but not for the reason you might think.  I hate them for the same reason I hate Notre Dame, the Dodgers, Duke, and the Celtics.  I HATE THE PATRIOTS BECAUSE AT SOME POINT IN THE PAST THEY BEAT MY BOYS!  PERIOD!

I couldn’t care less why they beat my boys.  Whether due to cheating, being better, or a combination of the two.  Even if it were primarily due to cheating, I still don’t care.  All cheating is not created equal.  If a prosecutor withholds evidence and as a result wins a conviction to send an innocent man or woman to prison, I care about that cheating.  If a person hides income in a divorce proceeding to reduce his/her child support obligation, I care about that cheating.  But if Tom Brady and/or Bill Belichick spy on the opponent and/or take air out of some balls to give them and edge at winning some football games, it just doesn’t make my short list of things about which to be outraged.

I am not suggesting that there should be no penalty.  If they broke the rules, they absolutely need to be held accountable.  But the moral indignation being pontificated is laughable.  The citing that this explains the Patriots’ success doesn’t even deserve a response, but I’ll try to provide one nonetheless: “Spygate” was revealed in 2007.  Brady went down for the season in the 2008 opener.  The Patriots still won 11 games that year WITH MATT CASSEL AT QB!  If winning 11 games with Matt Cassel at QB doesn’t convince you that Belichick can flat out coach independent of cheating, I give up.  And speaking of 2008, make no mistake about this: if it were revealed tomorrow that the 0-16 Lions both spied and deflated balls as the Patriots have, no one would give a damn.  Integrity of the game, blah blah blah…..GTFOHWTBS.

NBA Quick Takes: Russell Westbrook, Spurs vs. Hawks NBA Finals, and Dennis Schroder

January 22nd, 2015

by Kamal Hylton

Kamal Hylton Blog

Hello War Room Nation!

This is Kamal Hylton, your boy from North of the Border, a writer/editor for NBA Nation Australia and part of the War Room Family with The Gaffer and Hooligan Soccer Podcast on the War Room Sports Podcast Network.

While the podcast is taking a break, I thought I’d hop onto the WRS Blog and give you a weekly view on the NBA… through my eyes.

I’m not feelin’ Russell Westbrook’s Interview

By now you’ve all seen Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook’s interview, the one where he only used the word “execution” in all its various forms to answer reporters’ questions after the Thunder beat the Western Conference leading Golden State Warriors 127-115 and he had a career night of 17pts, 17ast and 15rebs.

To refresh your memory or for those that haven’t seen it, here it is:

Most people have come out and said things like “Screw the media!” and “Let Russ be Russ!”. I’m all for players being themselves and sometimes members of the media ask questions that deserve these types of answers, like when a reporter asked Westbrook this question in 2013.

However this trend is going too far and I’m now completely against it for a few reasons.

This isn’t even creative or original, copying Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch’s “Thankful” interview doesn’t get him any type of respect or brownie points with me… it just makes him look corny. Also, none of those questions were out of line in any way or could even be considered “dumb”. After the third use of “execution”, I would’ve shut my recorder/video camera off and walked away. Reporters only get limited time for post-game interviews, this nonsense cost those guys battery life and space on their devices as well as time that could’ve been spent with more engaging players.

Most of all it lacks professionalism on Westbrook’s part, those guys are there to do a job just like him and even if he doesn’t like doing interviews or has a problem with a particular reporter, I don’t think it’s that hard to suck it up and answer questions with an ounce of respect. Maybe I’m biased being part of the media, but this one word answer thing from players has gone from funny to tired REALLY quickly.

I’d love a Spurs vs. Hawks NBA Finals for one reason

I know it’s WAY too early to be talking about NBA Finals predictions, but the way the Hawks have been playing during this wining streak (currently at 13 games at the moment of writing this) has me wanting them to make the finals. Picking up the moniker “Spurs East”, I’d actually love to see them take on San Antonio for one major storyline.

Mike Budenholzer vs. Gregg Popovich… or what I like to refer to as Karate Kid vs. Mr. Miyagi.

karatekid_450x3001

Their story has the makings of a Hollywood film, let me set the scene.

Budenholzer spent 19 years under Popovich in San Antonio, working his way up from an unpaid video coordinator to assistant coach and as his right hand man. Together they won four NBA championships, Budenholzer playing the role of understudy to Pop until this season. Now striking out on his own, coach Bud has taken over a middling Atlanta Hawks team using the teachings of his grand master to make them one of the best in the association.

If Spike Lee or Steven Spielburg got hold of that script it’d be an instant hit! Being a self professed “basketball nerd”, I’m most fascinated by the high level game of human chess that these two would be playing on national TV. Popovich taught Budenholzer pretty much everything he knows about NBA coaching, but did he save a few tricks back for a moment like this?

I’m on the edge of my seat just thinking about the possibility of this game.

Dennis Schroder is my Homeboy!

I’m sure you all have non “superstar” players that you love watching or are fans of that others don’t understand why, maybe it’s the intense way he plays defense? jumps out of the gym? or drops dimes?

Well that player for me is Dennis Schroder, the second year German backup point guard on the Atlanta Hawks. Now I know what you’re thinking, why is he one of your favorite players? For one thing he has a smoothness to his game this season that’s enjoyable to watch on this Hawks team and the way he attacks the basket shows that few players can stay in front of him, how he comes off screens and glides to the rim is reminiscent of a slithering snake. The other reason why I like him is for the nickname that’s quickly catching on, Dennis “The Menace” is not only catchy but fits his style of play to a tee. It’s actually on a t-shirt, one that I bought myself (http://www.redbubble.com/people/laff/works/13048484-dennis-the-menace). I actually spoke with him for a few minutes after the Hawks defeated the Raptors at Air Canada Centre recently, talking about his development, the nickname and the fact he has fans in Australia.

(*Dennis Schroder interview courtesy of NBA Nation Australia)

He was fantastic, he’s a quiet guy but I get the feeling that’s mostly because of the minor language barrier. He has a great command of the English language, better than some people born in North America, but I get the feeling once he’s fluent in all the little nuances and references that he’ll hold his own in the trash talking department.

That’s all for now, but I’ll leave you with this cool “NBA On NBA” theme remix that recently came out by Boy Pierce.

Jeremy Maclin pulls out of Pro Bowl

The Philadelphia Eagles’ Pro Bowl shuffle continues.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ Pro Bowl shuffle continues.

Last week, RB LeSean McCoy pulled out of the game due to a minor knee injury. Soon thereafter, it was announced that long snapper Jon Dorenbos and WR Jeremy Maclin were added to the Pro Bowl roster and would soon be making the trip to Arizona. Maclin was to replace the Broncos’ Demaryius Thomas; Dorenbos was selected as a need player by Pro Bowl coach Jason Garrett.

But now, that has changed.

Maclin has opted out of his Pro Bowl spot “for personal reasons,” according to CSNPhilly. One of the major snubs on the roster initially, the wideout was finally named to the roster after a career season.

Lions WR Golden Tate will replace Maclin.

After finishing the season with a 10-6 record, Philadelphia had nine players named to football’s all-star game. Jason Peters, Jason Kelce, LeSean McCoy, Darren Sproles and Connor Barwin were all named to the initial roster. Cody Parkey, Evan Mathis, Dorenbos and Maclin were alternates.

After suffering an ACL injury and missing all of 2013, Maclin cut a one-year deal with the Eagles to prove that he was truly back to form. He did exactly that. Now, Maclin is an impending free agent looking to negotiate his first contract since his rookie deal. While I’m sure the Pro Bowl recognition is appreciated, it’s not worth the risk of sustaining injury.

Your Complete Guide to a Reveal Worthy Mid-Section

January 15th, 2015

Muscle Jawn

For more years than you can count, you have been on a quest for the holy grail of fitness, a unicorn to some.  You don’t ask God for much other than the death of your boss, winning the lottery, and a six-pack.  Day in and day out, you put in some hard time at the gym.  You toiled to no end, but the dreadful gut remained.  You took some fat burners and that green tea that Dr. Oz told you about.  You would never pass a newsstand and not pick up a fitness magazine covered by a chiseled model with bold colorful writing, telling you about “6 ways to a 6 pack in 6 minutes” or “the best food for flat abs” and read it cover to cover.  You’ve been following those fitness gurus on social media talking about waist-trainers, swearing by their effectiveness, and going as far as crediting them for their competition winning mid-sections.  You tried everything but alas nothing is happening.  Now you are wondering, what really is the 4-1-1 on losing the dreadful stomach pouch and getting that flat stomach or the more elusive 6-pack?  I promise you if you read and adhere to my every advice you will have no need to try the latest fad gadget or diet pills.

MMI’m not calling myself a fitness guru, but I just happened to know a thing or two, being a fitness trainer and nutritionist.  I have been in the business for a while, and I practice what I preach.  Also, I happen to know quite a bit about abs training.  I teach a fitness class called Hard-Core and from time to time I sport a 6-pack, or as of right now, I’m working on getting one to sport in the Spring/Summer.  So pretty much, I’m in the know about that well kept secret.  Yes you read that right, there’s one secret to achieving a fit mid-section …just one.  I know what you are thinking, “those sneaky sneaky fitness folks,  I totally knew it!  Those sons of biscuits”!!!  I know right (rolling my eyes).  Ok, here’s the secret.  Are you ready?!  Don’t read ahead or get too excited.  Ok Ok…The secret is…there IS NO SECRET!  No MAGIC PILL!  NOTHING!!  Flattening your stomach or building a 6-pack requires a multi-muscles exercise accompanied by cardiovascular training and a diet rich in nutrients.  In laymen’s terms, you have to burn some major calories to get rid of that fat and build some serious muscles to get that “toned” look.  Very straightforward; no BS!

First, let’s talk about the anatomy of the abs muscles. There is more to it than just a 6-pack.  For many, including my fitness clients, the abdomen has been marginalized to include just one muscle – the rectus abdominis, the part that looks airbrushed on Ryan Goslin.  However, the abdominal region is composed of several key muscles that contribute to core function (see figure). AbsThe abdomen is the region lying between the proximal chest and the distal pelvis. This region is served by several muscles that contribute to spine stability in a variety of postures, providing the ability to flex, side bend, and rotate the trunk.  These muscles also serve to protect the abdominal organs.  Four muscles provide shape and movement to the anterior abdominal wall; these muscles are the obliques (internal and external), transversus abdominis, and the rectus abdominis.  Three of these muscles are described as flat muscles (the obliques and the transversus abdominis), and one is described as being straplike (the rectus abdominis).  Not to bore you too much with scientific mumbo jumbo, the bottom line is your abs are a part of your core, a very important part of your body, and it’s responsible for so much more than you can imagine, like breathing, coughing, sneezing, and maintaining posture.  They are also connected to the muscles of the hips and back so without them there would be no walking to the fridge to grab that ice cream, which you shouldn’t be eating anyway.  To train your abs, you have to train your core muscles and pretty much your entire body since everything is connected.  You CAN NOT spot train.  If you can think you can do millions of crunches every day to get that chiseled stomach,  then I’ve got some bad news for you.  The only thing you will get is a broken back, literally.

A full body exercise consisting of aerobic and anaerobic activities is required to achieve a strong core by building abs muscles and burning that layer of gut fat to reveal a flat stomach or a sexy 6-pack.  A deficit in energy expenditure and caloric intake must be created; meaning besides exercising, you have to mind your diet as well.  You have heard the phrase, “abs are made in the kitchen”.  In a sense, this phrase is true but not the way you are led to believe.  Abs exercises alone are not enough to reduce abdominal fat and the girth of the abdomen, but they are known to increase the strength and endurance of the abdominal muscles.  Early results from a 2006 study found that walking exercise (not abdominal exercise specifically) reduced the size of subcutaneous abdominal fat cells.  So a combination of the two types is required to take care of the “energy expenditure” part and an excellent diet consisting of nutrients dense food and very low processed food is needed for the “caloric intake” part.  In addition, when you build muscle, your basal metabolic rate (the body ability to burn calorie while at res) increases, so in turn you’re impacting the deficit in calories.  So you have to work in the gym and the kitchen to achieve your goal.  Here’s a sample diet and sample training routine for further illustration.  When training abs, we tend to break the exercises down by the four muscles mentioned above; however, in reality the abdomen moves as one.  So realistically, every exercise trains the abs.

Abdominal fat, and fat cell size in particular, is a predicator of type 2 diabetes and other lifestyle related illnesses like heart disease; therefore it is more than being superficial to make reducing it or eliminating it a priority.  While on your quest, there are few rules to keep in mind.

1. No spot training.  Train all of your muscle groups at least 3 to 4 times a week accompanied by cardiovascular activity.

2. Diet is VERY important.  You cannot out-train a bad diet.  No processed or junk food.  Eat real food.  Some of the best food for fat burning are found in the diet sample above.  Oatmeal, eggs, leafy green vegetables, protein powder, nuts/nut butters, olive oil, fruits such as apples and berries, and lean meats.

3. No starvation.  The worst thing you can do while trying to lose belly fat is to eat a low calorie diet.  Yes a deficit is required but if you restrict caloric intake and send your body into starvation mode, it will hold onto the stored fat for dear life.

4. There is NO magic pill so stay away from fat burners.  Let your own metabolism do the work.  If energy boost is required, try consuming caffeine an hour before your aerobic exercise, it will spare glycogen and used store fat as energy.

5. Be patient and trust the process.  Rome was NOT built in a day.

Good luck and happy training!

The Magic of Symbols and the Perceptions of the Black Male

Symbols are very powerful.  They are magical gateways into our psyches and they can affect our subconscious in positive or negative ways.  They can take the form of words, sounds, gestures and visual images that convey ideas and beliefs. In Ancient Kemet (Egypt), symbols were used as languages and codes in the form of hieroglyphics that were for the esoteric benefit of the people. Today, symbols are still at work, but now they are reduced to no more than representations of conscious desires. For example, when you see the golden arches of McDonald’s, the mind conjures all of its representations at once; the Big Mac, Happy Meals, Ronald McDonald, etc., symbolic magic processed in the realm of human thought.

The magic of symbols have also been used to have harmful effects on groups of people, the black male in particular.  From “Birth of a Nation”, to co-opted Hip-Hop, to “For Colored Girls”, to “Black Plays” starring once-prominent actors and singers, the bombardment of degrading images of black males has reduced the psychological state of the viewer, desensitizing them to the humanness and greatness of black men.  No longer are there strong and powerful images of Muhammad Ali, the Black Panthers or Tommy Smith raising the black power fist in the 1968 Olympic Games.  With the help of subservient films like “The Butler”, “12 Years A Slave” and a few others, we have taken on the most passive and de-humanizing symbol of our struggle by laying on our backs saying, “I Can’t Breathe”.  The propaganda machine has done a great job in making Snuff films starring black males a normal and accepted occurrence and it’s only through our acquiescence that it continues.  Remember, Hitler made propaganda films (symbolic magic) to desensitize his country to the humanity of the Jews before he put them into ovens, so be mindful of what you allow into your subconscious.  You never know who is casting a spell on you.

Peace
