LeSean McCoy comes in at #45 in the ‘Top 100 players of 2013’

“They like me, they really like me!”  That’s what LeSean McCoy can say after hearing the well-deserved accolades from his NFL brothers about his speed and skill.

On the NFL Network’s continuing series of the “Top 100 best players of 2013,” nary an Eagles player had been mentioned in the bottom half of the countdown.  Sure, the Birds are coming off of a terrible season.  No players had been selected for the Pro Bowl.  Would the team collectively be slighted of this offseason accolade as well?

It certainly seemed that way until Thursday’s selections of numbers 50-41 were revealed.  The lone Eagle so far represented in the countdown?  Running back LeSean McCoy, very often was the single bright spot in games in the 2012 season, was featured as the 45th best player in the league as voted by his peers.

The segment opened with Steelers corner Ike Taylor saying of Shady, “Man, that boy’s got some Allen Iverson feet, but he’s playing football.”

Very high and appropriate praise for one of Philadelphia’s favorite Eagles.

McCoy’s peers went on to express their admiration of his speed, vision down the field, and ability as a receiver.  All of these attributes make Shady a difficult threat for defenses to contain.  And that’s why he is one of Philadelphia’s most potent offensive weapons.

Despite missing 4 games last season, McCoy finished the year with 840 rushing yards, , 373 receiving yards, and a total of 5 touchdowns (2 rushing, 3 receiving).

Shady topped players like Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez (47) and Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (46) in the episode.  Just ahead of McCoy were New England Patriots WR Wes Welker (44), Giants QB Eli Manning at number 43 (BOOO), Ravens DT Haloti Ngata (42), and Cowboys’ TE Jason Witten (41).

On the reaction show immediately following the unveiling of the latest players, Shady showed that he’s ready to prove himself all over again in 2013.

“This year coming up, I am healthy and have something to prove again.  I can’t wait.  I can’t think of a back in this league that can do as much as I can do.  I am focused and ready to roll.  I think Coach Kelly is bringing in a new offense that fits me so well, being in open space with so many looks and movements.  I think I will have a better year.”

Watching the highlights featured in the segment is probably one of the only times you will smile when thinking about or referencing the 2012 season for the Philadelphia Eagles.  Do yourself a favor and check out the video here.

LeSean McCoy sued for alleged assault in party bus incident

Eagles RB LeSean McCoy is definitely not cheering the allegations made in the lawsuit against him.

For anyone  in the public eye, it’s probably a good rule of thumb to try to stay off the pages of TMZ.  Not all news on the notorious gossip website is bad, but really, when is it ever truly positive?

If that was a goal of Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, then he has failed at his mission.  Shady was headline news on TMZ on Tuesday over an assault allegation filed against the star athlete.

The claims stem from an incident on a party bus from Philadelphia to New York City this past December.

The details of the suit, per TMZ, are as follows:

According to the lawsuit filed by a woman using the alias “Mary Roe” … the Philadelphia Eagles RB had invited 15 women to join him on a party bus that went from Philly to a NYC nightclub on December 18, 2012.

During the trip, the lawsuit alleges, McCoy, along with his bodyguard and a couple of other guys, began to spray some of the women with water.

Roe claims she protested the water spraying … so McCoy ordered his bodyguard Big John to “get her.”

In the suit, filed May 10 in Philadelphia, the woman claims McCoy and/or Big John proceeded to hit her in the face, causing her to fall to the ground.

While she was on the floor, the men allegedly physically restrained her and poured a beverage onto her hair, clothes and body.

And if things couldn’t get worse … the woman claims McCoy and Big John then forcibly ejected her from the party bus on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike.

But some of the women allegedly complained to McCoy about Roe getting the boot — so she was snatched back up from the side of the road and placed back on the bus.

The woman claims she was taken to a nearby rest stop — where the football player once again ditched her — and continued on with his party trip.

Roe is now suing for more than $50,000 in damages for assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, false imprisonment and negligence.  Roe says she suffered head trauma, a disc protrusion on her spine, bad sprains, contusions and bruises all over her body, and severe shock.

At the time of writing neither McCoy nor the Philadelphia Eagles had commented on the story.  However, The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane reported the following via Twitter:

Just asked LeSean McCoy to comment about allegations, he said, “I got to go” before he jumped into the passenger seat of a Porsche and left.

McCoy’s attorney, Andrew Smith, issued the following statement on the running back’s behalf:

“The allegations against LeSean McCoy are completely, unequivocally false.  There are no criminal charges pending and no probable cause was ever found.  This is sadly an attempt to extract money, and LeSean will vigorously defend any attempt to collect money through a personal-injury claim.”

The alleged victim filed a police report about the incident in New Jersey, before taking two trains to get back to Philadelphia, per the Philadelphia Inquirer.

These are only allegations and as none of us were there, there is no way to know the truth.  Unfortunately, this story comes just months after the ugly Baby Mama Twitter drama that unfolded between McCoy and his son’s mother this January.  Prior to that unfolding, Shady had a squeaky clean, unscathed image in the public eye.  Even if this story  proves to be untrue, the speculation is another hit to the once immaculate reputation of the tremendously talented player.

Philadelphia Eagles Announce Finalized Coaching Staff Under Chip Kelly

Ex Cleveland head coach Pat Shurmur joins the Eagles as offensive coordinator.

 

The Philadelphia Eagles elected not to acknowledge or confirm reports on additions to their coaching staff under Chip Kelly until all hires were finalized.  With the issue of a press release on Friday, they have announced that all moves are finally complete.

The final list is as follows:

Pat Shurmur (offensive coordinator)

Bill Davis (defensive coordinator)

Dave Fipp (special teams coordinator)

 

Greg Austin (assistant offensive line)

Jerry Azzinaro (defensive line/assistant head coach)

Bob Bicknell (wide receivers)

Erik Chinander (assistant defensive line)

Mike Dawson (defensive quality control)

Matt Harper (assistant special teams)

Josh Hingst (strength and conditioning)

Shaun Huls (sports science coordinator)

Bill Lazor (quarterbacks)

John Lovett (defensive backs)

Todd Lyght (assistant defensive backs)

Bill McGovern (outside linebackers)

Rick Minter (inside linebackers)

Justin Peelle (assistant tight ends)

Duce Staley (running backs)

Jeff Stoutland (offensive line)

Press Taylor (offensive quality control)

Ted Williams (tight ends)

Shurmur was most recently head coach of the Cleveland Browns for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.  His hire has been widely reported.  News that Davis, formerly linebackers coach of the Browns, would serve as the new defensive coordinator for Philadelphia just broke on Thursday.

A lot of love given to former Browns staff  in key positions for whatever reason.  Obviously Eagles fans hope and pray that the results will be far better than what has been seen from the Browns in recent years.

Dave Fipp (Special Teams Coordinator) served as the assistant special teams coach for the Miami Dolphins from 2011-12.  During his two years in Miami, the Dolphins ranked 2nd (2011) and 4th (2012) in the NFL in overall special teams rankings according to the data compiled by Dallas Morning News columnist Rick Gosselin.  Prior to the Dolphins, Fipp worked for three years as the assistant special teams coach for the San Francisco 49ers from 2008-10.  Before his time in the NFL, Fipp spent 10 years coaching in the college ranks at San Jose State (2005-07), Nevada (2004), Cal Poly (2001-03), Arizona (2000), and Holy Cross (1998-99).

Other highlights from the newly announced coaching staff, which rejoin several former members of Oregon’s coaching staff:

Jerry Azzinaro (Defensive Line/Assistant Head Coach) rejoins Coach Kelly as defensive line coach after serving in the same role on his staff at Oregon from 2009-12.  During that span, the Ducks defensive line compiled a total of 76 sacks.  Prior to joining the coaching staff at Oregon, Azzinaro was the defensive line coach at Marshall University in 2008 and at the University of New Hampshire in 2007.  Azzinaro also had stints with Duke (2004-06), Syracuse (1999-03), Maine (1998), UMass (1992-94, 1997), Boston College (1995-96), American International College (1987-91) and Western New England (D-III, 1986).

Bob Bicknell (Wide Receivers) most recently completed a three-year stint with the Buffalo Bills as their wide receivers coach (2012) and tight ends coach (2010-11).  Prior to that, he spent the previous three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs as assistant offensive line coach (2007), offensive line coach (2008) and tight ends coach (2009).  Before joining the NFL ranks, Bicknell was the offensive line coach at Temple in 2006 and coached in NFL Europe from 1998-2005.

Bill Lazor (Quarterbacks) joins the Eagles after spending the previous three seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Virginia.  Lazor boasts seven years of NFL coaching experience and most recently served as the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks (2008-09) and Washington Redskins (2006-07).  Lazor made his NFL coaching debut with the Atlanta Falcons in 2003 as an offensive quality control coach before becoming an offensive assistant with the Redskins from 2004-05.  In the collegiate ranks, he also held coaching stints at Cornell (1994-00) and the University of Buffalo (2001-02).  Lazor’s own experience as a player includes as an All-Ivy League quarterback at Cornell.

John Lovett (Defensive Backs) comes to Philadelphia with nearly four decades of coaching experience on his resume, primarily at the collegiate level.  He initially was hired by the University of Cincinnati this offseason after serving as the defensive backs coach at Texas Tech in 2012, mentoring a unit that led the Big 12 conference in pass defense.  Lovett’s career includes stints as defensive coordinator at Miami (Fla.), Bowling Green, Clemson, Auburn, Maine and Cincinnati.  He also spent one season as the defensive quality control coach for the New York Jets in 1984.  A graduate of C.W. Post in 1973, Lovett was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame after playing there as a linebacker and safety.

And yay – Deuce Staley stays with the Eagles but will coach running backs after spending the last two seasons as the team’s special teams quality control coach.  He also assisted Ted Williams in coaching the team’s running backs during his time here and has played a key role in the development of LeSean McCoy.  One of the most popular and toughest players to ever suit up in an Eagles uniform, Staley was originally a third-round pick of Philadelphia in 1997 and spent seven seasons with the team.

LeSean McCoy Apologizes for Weekend Twitter Tirade

Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy issued an apology on Monday for his profane and classless public spat via Twitter with his Baby Mama Steph late on Saturday night.  In it, he expresses remorse at how his actions impacted his family, fans and the Eagles organization.  He also comments at length about his desire to be a “great” father and a positive role model for his son.  McCoy also apologizes for predictably claiming that his account was hacked shortly before deactivating his Twitter profile:

“In light of the recent events that played out over Twitter this past weekend, I would like to express how deeply sorry and remorseful I am to my family, the Philadelphia Eagles, my fans, and every young person who views me as a role model. This is not who I am as a person, nor the image I ever wanted to portray of myself.  It’s definitely not the example I want to set for my son.

My Twitter account was not hacked.  I take full responsibility and I apologize for trying to make it seem like it was not me.  Due to my bad judgment and frustration, I allowed a very personal matter to be played out on a social network, of all things.  It was immature and unprofessional for me to do so and to encourage others to join in.

As a parent , emotions are often magnified when there are stressful and emotional situations concerning them.  I take great pride in being a good father and strive to one day be a great one.  I’ve always done everything in my means to provide for my son financially, emotionally, and most importantly with my time and heart.  I am sick over the fact that my actions have caused pain to him and all involved.  I have decided to handle this matter privately from here on out and I thank everyone for their continued support.”

One can only hope that, more than anything, McCoy will truly take his words about fatherhood to heart and think about his son before acting in the future.

In light of McCoy’s actions, many have wondered if teams should shut down the social media usage of their athletes.  That is absolutely not the right way to handle such matters, as it is, in effect, not managing the situation at all.  Social media can be an incredibly powerful marketing tool for players and teams, providing unprecedented ways for fans to connect with them.  For those who act out as Shady did, the issue is not Twitter.  It’s not Facebook or Instagram.  It’s a lack of common sense.  If it doesn’t come out in one form it will in another.  Perhaps social media teaches in a very public forum a critical lesson for those who missed it many times previous: a lesson in common sense.

LeSean McCoy’s Baby Mama Drama Unfolds in Explicit Detail on Twitter

Well.  LeSean McCoy certainly had an eventful night.  And lucky for us, we got to all see the drama unfold real time on Twitter.

Ah, the beauty of social media.

It all started innocently enough.  Shady is currently on vacation in Puerto Rico and sent a tweet out about boasting of his enjoyment.  Nothing unusual there.  But then, his  “baby mama” chose to make a correction to the spelling featured in McCoy’s tweet (screenshots courtesy of Black Sports Online):

 

Okay, alright.  We all hate when people do that passive aggressive nonsense on Twitter.  But wow – who among us could have predicted what was to come next?  A torrent of pent-up aggression, frustration and disrespect unfolded by Shady’s reaction to a single tweet that ultimately featured one word: “vacation.”

“@cutonime25: @angelface0330 man don’t ever n ya life write me about nothing…. U worthless can’t do nothing right WITHOUT ME. Sad u can’t spell or read”

Don’t think that Steph, the baby mama, was going to be talked about like that publicly and not have some incredibly nasty things to say as well:

And it continued.  On an on and on.

Even Shady’s teammates Todd Herremans and Evan Mathis couldn’t turn away from the trainwreck that was unfolding on their Twitter feeds:

If you go to check McCoy’s @CutonDime25 Twitter account now, you will see that it is no longer there.  Too bad he couldn’t have shown some restraint or stepped away from the keyboard prior to that.

What this is, is a damned shame.  I don’t know about you, but I didn’t need this kind of insight into LeSean’s life.  But he’s the one who put all of his business out there on the streets.  In a few single exchanges over social media, McCoy’s baby-faced, squeaky clean reputation was ruined.  And why, exactly?  Couldn’t he have relayed the same sentiments to Steph via, I don’t know, text message?  I know – I can be so old-fashioned sometimes.

Perhaps McCoy was never out to be a role model.  Or my personal favorite when athlete’s are caught in the wrong on Twitter –  that his account was hacked.  But it will all come too late.  The tweets were captured.  The articles written.  This information is out there for LeSean’s little son to see as soon as he can read.  Or when a cruel person wishes to tell him about the apparent mess that lead to his creation before that time.

Who knows what the hell actually transpired between LeSean and Steph?  Neither looks particularly great from their tweets.  As for Shady, stop playing the victim.  A woman looking to trap a rich athlete into having a baby with her?  Well, you can criticize her for that or look in the mirror for being the fool who subjected himself to the outcome, and God knows what else, by not using protection and believing a woman who’s name he didn’t even know.  Wasn’t that fact a gem, by the way?

The baby is the only one who matters here and it seems like he is unequivocally the loser with two immature parents who can’t control their feelings enough to avoid putting family business on the street.

There is just no reason this needed to happen and if LeSean McCoy is angry at anyone this day, it should be himself.  He could have walked away and carried on with his vocation vacation.  But no.  Instead he felt it appropriate to call out the mother of his child on, well, absolutely everything for us all to see.  And invited his followers to join in!

None of this changes that LeSean MccCoy is one of the brightest young talents in the NFL and one of the greatest assets on the Philadelphia Eagles.  But it sure would have been nice not to know about all of the drama lurking behind that winning smile.

Philadelphia Eagles Season Sinks Even Further Into Meaninglessness

The ending of Sunday’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins, the final home game of an awful season for the Birds, was a good analogy for the frustration of the entire year.

Nick Foles, trying to orchestrate a game-tying drive, found new tight end Evan Moore near the goal line only for Moore to drop the pass with 11 seconds left in the game.  For what would be the final play, Foles threw an incompletion that was ruled an illegal forward pass, thereby ending the game.

And so it went, with the Redskins winning 27-20 and on the cusp of winning the NFC East.  Which left the Eagles to sink even further into meaninglessness, falling to 4-11.

If the Eagles were trying to put on a good show for Andy Reid’s final home game or attempting to play the spoiler, they failed at both tasks.  But sadly, while we may have hoped for a different outcome, we didn’t really expect it.

There were some high points, certainly.  Foles’ 27-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin in the first quarter was a beauty.  And Dion Lewis notched the second touchdown of his career with a run into the endzone in the fourth.  Brandon Graham was fierce, leading the defense with 6 tackles and showing that his 2012 “I’m not a bust” campaign will be a success.  And Shady contributed his talents to the running and passing game, accruing 77 yards from 9 passes and getting 45 yards on the ground from 13 carries.

One of the highlights from the game only served to point out how bad this team has been this season.  Colt Anderson got an interception, the first time the Eagles have done so since Week 5.  That’s just pathetic.

Not surprisingly, there was a whole lot of bad.  Philadelphia converted on just 5 of 15 3rd downs.  The Redskins’ horrible defense did a number on Foles and the offensive line, sacking Nick five times.  And once again, as was the case when the Eagles and Redskins met up in Week 11, RG3, returning from an injury and visibly limping early in the game, put in another strong performance, going 16/24 for 198 yards for 2 touchdowns and 1 pick.

Foles’ numbers for the day were 32-of-48 for 345 yards with a touchdown, an interception and a lost fumble.  He sustained an injury to his throwing hand but neither he nor Reid pointed to that as the reason the team couldn’t get it done this time – as has been the case so many times this season.

The final test for Philadelphia comes next week when they play the Giants at 1 pm at the Meadowlands.  This painful chapter of Eagles history will soon draw to a close, with a report this morning from ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio on Mike and Mike saying that Reid will be fired on December 31, a day after the team’s final game.

We’ll see.  But it would be fitting to ring in 2013 Reid-free to show that we are truly entering a new era.

The end is almost near.  I can’t remember ever wanting to see the end of the football season come to a conclusion but this season warrants that exception.  And then will be an offseason of a lot of uncertainty and change.  But it’s time.

And, in case you’re wondering, if the draft were held today the Eagles would have the fourth overall pick.

Washington Redskins vs Philadelphia Eagles: Birds relishing the role of spoiler?

A lot has changed since the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins first met in Week 11.  That game was Nick Foles’ first career start in the NFL.  Both teams were 3-6.

But that’s where the fortunes of the teams took divergent paths.

Since then, Washington has won 5 games in a row and the Eagles….haven’t.  The Skins have found that they are more blessed at the quarterback position than anyone knew, after Kirk Cousins stood in for RG3 last week and led the team to victory on the road against the Cleveland Browns in Week 15.

This week, Griffin III will be back to face the Eagles at what is very likely Andy Reid’s final game at the Linc.  While the team undoubtedly welcomes his return and leadership, RG3 faces some challenges on his offense, particularly from Washington’s offensive line.  They’ve been hit with a rash of issues, both injuries and suspensions.  Against a Philadelphia d-line that is finally bringing pressure to the quarterback, it could be a rough game for RG3.  But he’s more than adept at finding ways to escape danger and Washington will try to bring rookie gem RB Alfred Morris into the fold as much as possible.

Eagles fans will see the return of LeSean McCoy to the field, his first time in action since that Week 11 meeting with the Redskins when he left late in the game with a concussion.  Will he have a limited role while the Birds try to give Bryce Brown more playing time to work on securing the freaking ball and affording Dion Lewis some opportunities to take the field?  It seems silly to needlessly risk Shady sustaining further injury but we’ll see how it goes.

The Redskins come into this game with everything in the world to play for — if they win this week and next, they will have won the NFC East for the first time since 1999.  The Eagles as spoilers?  Is it really that fun or interesting playing “spoiler” when every team in your division has a chance but you?  I think the motivation for Philadelphia will be more to put in a strong showing for the final home game of their head coach.  But will that be enough to propel them past Washington’s playoff aspirations?

After the mess we saw against the Bengals, I don’t think it will be.

More things to watch:

  • Will special teams suffer yet another epic meltdown?
  • How will the crowd at the Linc greet  Reid?
  • After almost a full season, the Birds are still trying to figure out this safety situation.  Nate Allen was benched, Kurt Coleman is back at free safety and Colt Anderson remains, switching to strong safety.  We’ll see how it goes.

Sunday at the Linc: Will Fans Cheer or Boo Andy Reid?

Regardless of the outcome of today’s game at Lincoln Financial Field between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins, it will be a significant day in the franchise’s history.  Why?  Because it will very likely mark the last game in Philadelphia for Andy Reid, the last time he will have an opportunity to interact with thousands of Eagles fans.

How will the good-bye go?  Will fans boo?  Will they applaud?  The curiosity of seeing the final reception for Reid from Birds fans may well override the storyline of the three-way tie in the NFC East that will, in part, take place on the field.  We already know, of course, that the Eagles are the only team in the division with no part of that race.

Players like LeSean McCoy, who will take to the field Sunday after recovering from a concussion, doesn’t want to think about the rapidly approaching steps leading to the end of Reid’s tenure in Philadelphia.

“I’m not thinking like that.  I don’t want to answer that type of question.  As far as I’m concerned, he’s our coach right now and hopefully in the future.”

For better or for worse, Shady is in Reid’s corner until the very end.

“If you sat here and tried to name five to eight coaches that’s better than Coach Reid, I would like to hear them, because Coach Reid’s a good coach.  He gets blamed for everything.  Sometimes if you break down the film or break down the plays and the mistakes, how do you fault the coach for that?  But I guess people have their own opinions and their minds are made up.  The thing about the team is we know how good of a coach he really is.  Whatever happens, happens.  I’m behind Coach Reid 110 percent.”

Yes, it is players who are the ones who actually play the game.  But from an outside perspective, the sloppy play and poor fundamentals point to a lack of discipline.  A lack of respect for the game.  And no one on a team is more important in setting a tone of discipline and respect than the head coach.

Does Reid deserve a warm send-off from Philadelphia fans at the Linc on Sunday?  I’d say so.  If nothing else, it’s because the nightmare of the past two seasons is nearing its conclusion.  Yes, Big Red brought a lot of success to the franchise over his fourteen years with the team and that should be acknowledged.  But he is also made a number of shocking miscues that have led directly to where the Eagles find themselves today.

The long march to the end of the season is thankfully almost over for this team, as is, in all likelihood, the end of the Reid era in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Eagles TE Clay Harbor Placed on IR

Another one bites the dust as #2 tight end Clay Harbor was placed on injured reserve by the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday.

Harbor suffered a lower back injury during Thursday night’s game against the Bengals.  That game was his first career start, filling in for a concussed Brent Celek.  Against Cincinnati, Harbor had 3 catches for 30 yards and, unfortunately, lost a fumble.

The third-year player finishes the year with a career high 25 catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

Thankfully for the Eagles, Celek will be back in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Redskins.

No corresponding roster move has yet been made by the team.

In other injury news from a decimated Philadelphia Eagles offense, LeSean McCoy has been cleared by an independent doctor and returned to practice on Monday.  As for whether he’ll play on Sunday, head coach Andy Reid said,

“There’s a chance he ends up playing for us this week.  We’ll see how it goes with the practices this week.  He practiced (Monday) and did well.”

Injuries Keep Piling Up for the Philadelphia Eagles as DeSean Jackson Placed on IR

To say that the  Philadelphia Eagles offense has been unlucky when it comes to injuries in the 2012 season is to put the situation mildly. The o-line has been decimated by injuries, Mike Vick and LeSean McCoy are struggling to recover from concussions, and another key weapon was added to the list this week: DeSean Jackson.

Head coach Andy Reid said the wideout was placed on IR after suffering fractures to ribs in the first quarter of the Monday Night Football contest against the Carolina Panthers, ending his season. Jackson finished the season with a disappointing 45 catches for 700 yards and 2 touchdowns.

In related news, Reid also revealed on Tuesday that Jason Peters is also headed to IR. He had previously been placed on the non-football injury list.

It doesn’t like the Eagles offense will catch a break anytime soon as the injuries continue to pile up.
