This man right here? Do not mess with him…Or his quarterback.

Sunday’s 37-34 Philadelphia Eagles victory over the Washington Redskins showed just why divisional matchups in the NFL are so anticipated-because they are so heated. There is pure hatred in the veins of the players for their opponents.

With WR DeSean Jackson’s return to his former home of the Linc as a backdrop, the sheer dislike that these teams have for each other was evidenced in the fourth quarter of the game. Things got “chippy” (I hate that word) when Redskins defensive lineman Chris Baker planted a late, ugly hit on Eagles quarterback Nick Foles. Philadelphia All Pro tackle Jason Peters was having none of that, and went after Baker for the cheap shot on his quarterback.

A full-scale brawl ensued, clearing both team’s benches. WATCH:

When it was all over, both Baker and Peters were ejected from the game. And thankfully, Foles got up to finish the game and seal the victory for his team.

While a fight is never the finest moment of any team or player, Foles has proven that he is incredibly tough.  He was literally laid out by the hit, but found a way to get back up to and finish what he had started. And Peters, apologetic post-game for his role in the scuffle, became an all-out hero to Philly fans for the loyalty he displayed in going to any lengths to protect his quarterback.

Philadelphia Eagles, Jason Peters agree to 5-year deal

Jason-Peters

A priority for any football team during the offseason is to take care of those who have taken care of them. The Philadelphia Eagles did just that on Wednesday when they signed All-Pro LT Jason Peters to a 5-year contract extension.

The veteran offensive lineman rebounded from injuring his Achilles twice during the 2012 offseason, leading him to miss all of the 2012 season. Peters returned to the Eagles in 2013 and produced yet another successful season with the Birds that got him his sixth Pro Bowl nod. The strength and stability of the o-line, with Peters’ assistance, led RB LeSean McCoy to a record setting season as the NFL’s leading rusher and helped QB Nick Foles have a breakout season.

The deal, according to CSNPhilly’s Reuben Frank, will pay Peters an average of $10 million a year.

Head coach Chip Kelly had nothing but praise for Peters:

“There aren’t many people cut from the same cloth as Jason Peters. To be able to bounce back from two Achilles injuries and return to an All-Pro level speaks not only to his incredible athleticism, but proves just how hard he works at his game. Having him at left tackle provides a lot of comfort to our quarterback and to our entire offense. He’s a guy that many players look up to in our locker room.”

General Manager Howie Roseman spoke further on why securing Peters to the team until 2018 was a priority for the team.

“Jason is everything you look for in a left tackle. The unique blend of size, speed and athleticism that Jason possesses is something that everyone wants in an offensive lineman. However, what really makes him unique is his desire to improve day in and day out despite the fact that he’s played at an elite level for so many years. We are truly rewarding Jason’s excellence, as he’s a guy who has made six Pro Bowl appearances and has been selected an All-Pro five times. We’re excited to be able to keep him in Philadelphia for years to come.”

Peters is regarded by many as the best left tackle in the game, and with extending the 32-year old’s contract,  the Eagles rewarded Peters for his hard work while securing his talent  for the next several years.

Peters speaks about his new deal here:

Philadelphia Eagles OT Jason Peters arrested for drag racing in Louisiana

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

by Brandyn Campbell

Philadelphia Eagles OT Jason Peters was arrested  Wednesday morning for drag racing, then fleeing  police in Monroe, LA. The story was first reported by USA Today.

Ah. I see we are in the “not terribly long but too long for some athletes” stretch of free time from the end of spring workouts until training camp.

Peters drove a white Camaro that an officer saw speed against a blue sedan once the light turned green at a traffic light.

You thinking what I’m thinking? Pretty sure Peters’ car had the upper hand in that race…which, unfortunately, was part of the problem. The sedan pulled over when authorities attempted to pull over both cars but Peters continued to speed away, exceeding 100 mph.

Why this seemed to be a good thing to do according to Peters we may never know. He finally pulled over in a shopping center parking lot off of I-20.

The Eagles released a statement about the arrest of Peters, who missed all of the 2012 season due to an Achilles injury.

“We are aware of the reports that Jason Peters was arrested this morning in Louisiana. We have been in contact with Jason and due to the legal nature of this matter, we will not have any further comment at this point.”

You may remember that Peters was also arrested in March of 2011 for disturbing the peace while heading to a Rick Ross concert in Shreveport, LA.

Chip Kelly has early praise for LB Mychal Kendricks, QB Matt Barkley in 3rd week of OTAs

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

by Brandyn Campbell

Eagles at work.
(Image via the Philadelphia Eagles’ Facebook page)

The third straight week of Eagles OTAs took place outside in Monday’s rain, and head coach Chip Kelly wasn’t apologetic.

Perhaps it’s not ideal for reporters, he joked, but this is real life.  Football is played outside and his players must be prepared to play in any kind of weather.

It’s more of Kelly’s desire to simulate real game experiences for his team.

Kelly unveiled another practice technique new to the NovaCare yesterday — one that a journalist described as using “fly swatters”.  Objects that meet that physical description were taped to the shoulders of assistants, a technique the coach used at Oregon.  Okay, but what on Earth for?

“It simulates a pass rush.  So when you’re in seven on seven, obviously, you’ve got to throw through the lane.  We made those at Oregon, and it gives us an opportunity.  It’s the exact height of a 6’4″ defensive lineman with his hands up.  You can’t throw over everybody, so you have to throw through throwing lanes. It’s the best way we can simulate that.”

Ahh.  Rather clever, that.

While continually stating that it’s too early to read anything into what transpires in practices, Kelly did take the opportunity to praise certain players when asked about them.  For instance, he is clearly high on second-year linebacker Mychal Kendricks’ abilities.

“I think Mychal’s an athletic, real physical linebacker, but I think his biggest attribute is his athleticism.  He’s a three‑down linebacker, he doesn’t have to come off the field on third down.  He excels in pass coverage, but he’s physical enough to play on first and second down.  He’s one of the more athletic linebackers in this league, so really excited about his future and what he can do.  He can do everything we’ve asked him to do.”

As has been the case previously, Kelly said it’s too early to read too much into which players are playing with the first team.  He stated that he and his coaching staff were just “rolling guys through” the different practice teams to see how they perform.

Mike Vick was back to taking reps with the first team after Nick Foles had an opportunity to do so last week, but it was Matt Barkley who garnered much of Kelly’s praise at Monday’s press conference.

“Matt’s done a great job.  He’s a real student of the game.  Had a great background to begin with.  Started every game in high school and in college, so his experience that he came in here with.  I don’t know if anybody’s done that, having that much experience coming in as a rookie.  Real student of the game, does a great job of grasping concepts and understanding what we’re trying to do and not just what the receivers are running for routes.  I think that’s kind of sometimes with the rookie, what routes are they running, and I’m going to throw the ball.  Matt does a great job understanding the overall concept that’s being run and then being able to kind of change…It’s not just he’s so much more gifted than anybody else.  It’s really how hard he works at the game.  Lot of fun to be around and lot of fun to coach. “

When asked specifically about Danny Watkins, Kelly revealed his approach to reviewing every player on this Philadelphia squad.

“No, I have no expectations of anybody.  When I got here on January 16th, it didn’t matter to me if you were a first round pick or an undrafted free agent.  It’s about putting the best team on the field.  Where they got picked in the past or those things, it was a clean slate with us coming in.”

No player can rely on his past successes or failures on this team.  It’s about how they perform now as they acclimate to a new system.

Other notes from Monday:

-LT Jason Peters was absent from practice for undisclosed reasons but Kelly stated that it was not injury related.

-Safety Kenny Phillips was also absent from Monday’s practice but was at the Complex in the training room.

-Kelly revealed that he’s not one to talk much about injuries, but said what has already been disclosed about TE James Casey: He should be ready for training camp this summer after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

Philadelphia Eagles LT Jason Peters on His Recovery: ‘I’m 100%’

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

by Brandyn Campbell

Will Jason Peters return to his former glory?
(Image via Rittenhoused)

The demise of the 2012 Philadelphia Eagles offensive line began before the season even started.  It all started when Pro Bowl tackle Jason Peters suffered an injury to his Achilles — two times.  That seemed to set the tone for the line for the year, with injuries to Jason Kelce and Todd Herremans befalling the o-line as the season progressed.

As the Eagles go through the earliest part of their offseason program under new coach Chip Kelly and Peters returns to work, the question of the tackle’s status following a year of rehab for his injury looms large.  Returning to a player’s previous ability level following an Achilles injury is a challenge, but it’s one that Peters plans to meet.

While participating in voluntary workouts with Philadelphia teammates at the NovaCare Peters proclaimed, “I’m 100 percent” and, according to Peters, he has been for quite some time.

“I was going to come back last year, but it was a bad season.  I could have (played), but I didn’t want to risk it with a losing season.  And the coaches kind of held me back a little bit.”

Peters is not satisfied simply to have recovered from the injury.  If he is not back at the level of play of his 2011 Pro Bowl season, he’s not taking the field.

“I’m not going to get out there if I couldn’t be back to where I was before I got hurt.”

The coaching staff will start to get a read on Peters’ post-recovery performance at the Eagles’ first minicamp on April 16. With the increased tempo anticipated from Kelly’s practices, Peters is planning to get down to 320 from his playing weight of 340 in 2011 so he can be lighter on his feet and prepared for “whatever the coaches throw at us.”

One Month ‘til the Draft: Who’s the Best Pick for the Philadelphia Eagles?

Monday, March 25th, 2013

by Brandyn Campbell

As March draws to a close, football’s focus turns increasingly to the upcoming 2013 NFL draft, which is exactly one month away.  The Philadelphia Eagles will get the spotlight early, selecting fourth due to their abysmal 4-12 2012 season.  With the stakes so high, Philadelphia cannot afford to miss with their draft choice.

This year’s draft will be different from that of 2012, including the fact that the first and second choice picks are not known.  In fact, there is not a clear consensus as to which prospect will be drafted first.  There isn’t the killer crop of quarterbacks that we saw last year.  But the draft is always a different animal from year to year.  The Eagles need to make the most of the talent present in 2013 and choose wisely.  So who might they choose?

There is a lot of buzz surrounding Alabama corner Dee Milliner (6’0, 201), particularly after the deficiencies of Philadelphia’s secondary in the past few seasons.  The corner is known for a remarkable combination of athleticism and size.  Milliner appears on Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft as the second-best overall player in the draft, saying

“Nnamdi Asomugha won’t be wearing an Eagles uniform in 2013, and in a division with Eli Manning, Tony Romo and Robert Griffin III, the Eagles can’t simply attempt to piece together the secondary.  They need talent, and Milliner offers the best cornerback talent in the draft.  Not a tough pick.”

Can the Birds get him?

Mike Mayock ranks 6’2, 311 pound Star Lotulelei of Utah as the top defensive end for a 3-4 system, which certainly has to make him of possible interest to the Birds, particularly after racking up 42 tackles, 11 for loss, 5 sacks in his senior year.

Chip Kelly is plenty familiar with 3-4 outside linebacker Dion Jordan (6’6, 248), also ranked as the top in his position in the draft.  His height allows him to quickly cover a lot of ground and get to tight ends and slot receivers in the open field.

Philadelphia could also use some help on the offensive line, with Jason Peters and Jason Kelce coming off of ACL injuries and former first rounder Danny Watkins showing repeatedly that he cannot provide what the line needs.  Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel (6’6, 306) is considered by many to be the top overall talent in the draft.  However, if he still around when the Eagles are on the clock it will be a pick that will be hard to refuse.  If Joeckel is not available, perhaps the Birds will consider Central Michigan’s Eric Fisher (6’7, 306), who NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks describes as, “adding an athletic edge blocker with tremendous potential.”

Half of the fun of the draft is the anticipation.  The waiting, the wondering, the storylines that may unfold leading up to draft day that may change a player’s standing.  But the Eagles have got to hit their pick out of the park and pick up a player that will add immediate impact to team.  Who will that player be?  Only 31 days left to find out.

Injuries Keep Piling Up for the Philadelphia Eagles as DeSean Jackson Placed on IR

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

by Brandyn Campbell

To say that the  Philadelphia Eagles offense has been unlucky when it comes to injuries in the 2012 season is to put the situation mildly. The o-line has been decimated by injuries, Mike Vick and LeSean McCoy are struggling to recover from concussions, and another key weapon was added to the list this week: DeSean Jackson.

Head coach Andy Reid said the wideout was placed on IR after suffering fractures to ribs in the first quarter of the Monday Night Football contest against the Carolina Panthers, ending his season. Jackson finished the season with a disappointing 45 catches for 700 yards and 2 touchdowns.

In related news, Reid also revealed on Tuesday that Jason Peters is also headed to IR. He had previously been placed on the non-football injury list.

It doesn’t like the Eagles offense will catch a break anytime soon as the injuries continue to pile up.

Shifts Along the O-line for the Philadelphia Eagles with King Dunlap Back at Starting LT

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

by Brandyn Campbell

Since the firing of former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo last week, we’ve been waiting for the corresponding shoe to drop on offense.

After head coach Andy Reid’s pronouncement that Mike Vick would remain his starting quarterback and that Marty Mornhinweg would continue to call plays on offense, we knew that no sizable changes were coming on that side of the ball for the Birds.

No, there will be no major, seismic-shift-type changes.  But lo and behold, the week after Philadelphia’s bye has produced some shifts, specifically on the offensive line.

The never-ending rotation at left tackle continues with King Dunlap now back to being the starter.  Yes, that means that Demetress Bell has been demoted from the position yet again, rightly so after an awful outing against Detroit.  CSNPhilly’s Reuben Frank initially reported the change.  Many other factors are obviously involved, but the Birds are 2-0 with Dunlap starting at LT and 1-3 with Bell in that role.

The offensive line has been a constant area of struggle for the Eagles this season, starting with the injury to Jason Peters’ Achilles in the offseason.  Dunlap’s promotion, which comes after Bell replaced him on the line due to a hip injury, shows that the team is still struggling to get it right.

Philadelphia also made a move on Tuesday to better address depth on the line, which has also been a problem this season.  The team announced that backup center Steve Vallos had been released and Matt Tennant was signed.

Tennant (6-4, 300) played with the New Orleans Saints for 28 games in the 2010 and 2011 seasons before heading to New England for 2012.  He was released by the Patriots on October 20.  Tennant was a 5th-round draft selection of the Saints in 2010 out of Boston College.

To summarize, Tennant will now be the backup to backup Dallas Reynolds, who was the backup for Jason Kelce but became the starter after Kelce suffered an ACL injury.  Kelce, by the way, had surgery to repair the tear earlier this week.  Hope he gets well soon — he has been sorely missed on the field.

“The Longest Yard”: Crime in the NFL

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

A little over a month ago, the NFL announced that they would not be disciplining any player conduct infractions that may occur during the work stoppage period.  Really, I’m not sure why they felt inclined to make that announcement, considering that they technically have no right to discipline anyone while there is no collective bargaining agreement in place.  Anyway, ever since this announcement has been made, the police blotter has been…how shall we say?…blotting.  I’ll begin with some of the more tame accusations and end this with some of the more serious offenses.  And if we’re playing the word association game, when it comes to the word “tame” when speaking of athletes and their scrapes with the law, we’re usually talking about really stupid offenses.

Cowboys “young” receiver Dez Bryant was ejected from an upscale Dallas shopping mall after he allegedly broke out into a profanity-laced tirade after he and his buddies were confronted by “Paul Blart Mall Cop” about their sagging pants.  Now, sagging pants is a phenomenon that I’ve never quite understood.  I can’t even fathom being comfortable with my belt wrapped around my upper thighs and displaying my “Underoos” to the world…but I digress.  This is beside my point.  Okay, maybe one more point.  Sagging pants is said to have evolved from prison culture.  In the “joint”, if you are sagging your pants, it conveys the message to the other inmates that you are…“spoken for”.  Now, I ask…Why do young people want to walk around these days looking like Bubba’s b*tch?  Well, I can’t blame it entirely on the younger folks, because people of my own generation have done and many STILL do this.  But is it a cause worth fighting for to the point of ejection from a public place and involvement of “the law”?  Come on Dez.

Next we have Philadelphia Eagles’ snap-jumping left tackle, Jason Peters.  Peters was arrested in Shreveport, LA for violating the city’s noise ordinance due to the volume of the music coming from his car.  When asked to turn the volume of his car stereo down, he provided resistance.  When asked to produce his driver’s license, he refused, prompting the officer to tack on another charge of resisting arrest.  He was later released on $628 bond.  Maybe this is why he has trouble hearing the snap count.

Next up is Tennessee Titans’ receiver Kenny Britt.  Britt allegedly raced away from police officers who were attempting to pull him over for speeding in his hometown of Bayonne, New Jersey.  When the officers finally caught up with him, he and a male passenger were walking away from the vehicle.  Britt initially denied being the driver, but later came down off that story.  He is charged with eluding officers, hindering apprehension, and obstruction of governmental function.  Not to mention that his passenger was found with drugs in his possession.

Probably the biggest example from the “Stupid Files”, we have Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Mike Vrabel, who was arrested for theft at the Belterra Casino in Florence, Indiana, for allegedly stealing alcohol.  HUH???  REALLY Mike???  In addition to being a Superbowl winning linebacker, Vrabel is also a named plaintiff in the players’ antitrust lawsuit against the league, AND a member of the NFLPA’s Executive Committee.  We would think he’d know better, but we obviously can’t put ANYTHING past ANYBODY.  He was released 5 hours after being booked on $600 bond.  In Indiana, this offense is considered a Class D felony, so Mike “I wanna get twisted for free” Vrabel faces a sentence of 6 months to 3 years in prison for his boneheaded decision.  However, I’m sure he’ll never see a day behind bars.  We all know how this goes.

Next we have Green Bay Packers’ defensive end Johnny Jolly, who for a while, was actually IN jail, and had remained there until his April 20th court hearing, where he pleaded guilty to codeine possession, a felony drug charge.  Police found 600 grams of codeine in his car when he was stopped in Houston, Texas back in March.  At the time, he was already on probation for a similar charge stemming from a 2008 arrest.  He was in jeopardy of facing jail time if convicted, considering a conviction would have been a violation of his probation.  However, like many professional athletes, he got off rather easy.  His plea landed him a 90-day stint in rehab and 5 years of probation, which is being termed “deferred adjudication”.  The District Attorney essentially dismissed the latest case because Jolly pleaded to the prior case.

Our next contestant on “The Blotter is Right” is Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ cornerback Aqib Talib.  Talib AND HIS MOTHER Okolo Talib allegedly fired a gun at his sister’s boyfriend during an incident in Garland, Texas.  He was later released on $25,000 bond and faces up to 20 years in “the pokey” (sagging his pants for the aforementioned “Bubba”) if convicted.  I have a question about this one:  How the hell can two people fire one gun?  I guess it could have been a “pop-pop-pass” situation.  Who knows?  Someone should probably just take the rap for this one and bring it to conclusion.  But who takes the rap?…The family bread winner…or the family matriarch?  Considering Okolo Talib’s alleged behavior, I may be exaggerating her role in the family, but you never know.  Maybe this is the only way she knows how to be Mama Lion, and Mama Lion must protect her cubs, right?

Lastly (and not because there aren’t more…just that I set out to write a blog, not a book…THIS TIME!), we have three NFL players who were actually the victims of the news on the police blotter…or were they?  In a 5 day span, two NFL players were stabbed, both allegedly by the ladies in their lives.  Miami Dolphins’ receiver Brandon Marshall was stabbed in the stomach by his wife, who claims it was done in self defense.  Considering Brandon Marshall’s history of domestic violence, I’m not sure if there is anyone on the planet who doesn’t believe her.  “Oh what a tangled web we weave.”  Denver Broncos’ defensive end Jason Hunter was allegedly stabbed by his girlfriend, but both players are expected to make full and speedy recoveries.  I guess these NFL wives and girlfriends aren’t used to these guys being around so much at this time of year.  Maybe they’re a bit agitated with this lockout “cramping their styles”.  In addition to these domestic stabbings, Washington Redskins receiver Brandon Banks was also stabbed in an altercation at a DC nightclub back in February.

The NFL lockout began on March 12.  From March 12 till today. there have been 10 NFL players arrested during that period alone.  The aforementioned few were just some of the more notable arrests that have taken place during this tumultuous off-season, and I haven’t even mentioned Albert Haynesworth and his TWO arrests since last season ended.   The NFL and its players need to hurry and get a deal done because these players are OBVIOUSLY bored.  They need to be at some OTA’s or something else constructive/time-consuming, so they won’t be “sagging” in Malls, banging wack rappers at 200 decibels, “sippin’ on that sizzurp”, stealing booze, running from cops, groping “ta-tas”, getting shanked themselves, or trying to “murk” their potential bothers in law.  They’d better hurry before next season is yet another remake of “The Longest Yard”.
