All eyes on Mark Sanchez as Philadelphia Eagles face Carolina Panthers

As with any game, there are many important aspects of the Philadelphia Eagles on which to focus this Monday night. But who are we kidding?: Tonight’s game against the Carolina Panthers is all about Mark Sanchez.

Every step he takes, every move he makes, we’ll be watching him. Every throw. Every decision. Can Sanchez ably lead the Birds for the six to eight weeks that Nick Foles is expected to be out with a broken collarbone? If so, is he the quarterback on which we should hitch our trailers for an even longer stretch of time? If Sanchez can avoid the turnovers that became an all-too prevalent part of Foles’ performance this season and turn in a series of consistent performances, the answer could be yes. But those are big “ifs”. Sanchez has his own history of turning the ball over to overcome. Since entering the league in 2009, the former USC quarterback has thrown for more interceptions (71) than touchdowns (70) in his career.

Evan Mathis’will return to the o-line just as Todd Herremans exits for the season due to torn biceps. The Eagles have finally found some footing with their running game and would do well to take advantage of the 131.9 yards the Panthers have allowed on the ground each game. With a healthy Chris Polk added to the already powerful mix of LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles, the Birds could have a dynamic game on the ground tonight. The run needs to be a prevalent part of tonight’s game to allow Sanchez time to adjust to the role of signal caller for Philadelphia.

There is another important story to watch as the Eagles take the field at the Linc tonight and for the remainder of the season. How will Philadelphia fill in for the loss of DeMeco Ryans? Defensive coordinator Bill Davis plans for Casey Matthews and Emmanuel Acho to take over Ryans’ middle linebacker responsibility as far as making calls. On the field, the defense will use a combination of Acho, Matthews, and Mychal Kendricks to make up for the loss of Ryans. It’s a similar solution as to when Kendricks was sidelined for several weeks, Davis said last week.

“[Linebackers] Coach Rick Minter does a great job of teaching the concepts of both so we can move multiple guys to the MIKE or the WIL depending on what we need”, Davis said. “Whether we’re in dime or nickel or anything like that. Right now it’s the same rotation as when Mychal [Kendricks] was down. It’ll be [Emmanuel] Acho and Casey [Matthews] handling first and second down duties at the DeMeco spot instead of the Mychal spot. They’re cross-trained and they’ll be fine.”

While the Panthers defense features Luke Kuechly, last year’s Defensive Player of the Year at MLB, it is struggling this season. They have already given up 236 points this season. They gave up only 241 in all of 2013. They are missing Pro Bowl DE Greg Hardy. Their struggles will be a nice complement to an Eagles team adjusting to key losses on both sides of the ball.

Cam Newton and the Panthers’ offense aren’t doing well on any front this year, putting up just 19.7 points per game, 25th in the league. By comparison, the Eagles average 29.2 points per game (5th in the NFL). Newton is completing just 57% of his passes, and Carolina’s receiving corps’ top producers are Greg Olsen, Kelvin Benjamin and former Eagle Jason Avant. Love Avant as we do, that is hardly a stellar lineup. The Panthers are also putting together just 94.7 rushing yards per game, which leaves them with no clear answers for getting points on the board.

A Panthers team with significant issues facing an Eagles team adjusting to key losses on both sides of the ball may make for a more competitive Monday night matchup than we’d like to see. But the Eagles will still prevail.

Prediction: Eagles 24, Panthers 14

For football players, all that needs to be said to opposing players is done on the field. Once that’s done, there’s always Twitter to add insult to injury.

Enter Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho, who provided simple commentary on former teammate DeSean Jackson’s return to the Linc.

The Philadelphia Eagles will face off against the New York Jets tonight at the Linc to end their 2014 preseason. While the game will have little bearing on the regular season, it will make an impact on dozens of lives. Players on both sides of the ball must fight with everything they have to gain a spot on the 53-man roster. Can they be good enough, strong enough, and fast enough? Their life’s work depends on it.

Between the end of tonight’s game and Saturday at 4 pm, the Eagles must trim their roster from 75 to 53 players. While some of these men may get a chance with other teams, this is as far as the NFL road goes for many. It will be a bittersweet night that will see Labor Day weekend begin with layoffs for 22 men in Philadelphia.

Chip Kelly doesn’t like this part of the game, but it’s his reality as an NFL coach.

“As we told these guys from Day 1, Goal 1 for us is that you make this football team. But then Goal 2 for us is that you make another football team with the exposure you get here. Hopefully, we prepared you for that. Hopefully, those guys get a chance to catch on . . . That’s what it’s about.”

There are plenty of Eagles players who are on the cusp and whose performance in this game will decide their futures in Philadelphia. Here 5 such players:

LB Emmanuel Acho: He’s been in this very spot before. Acho didn’t make the 53-man roster last preseason, but was brought in late October after injuries on the team and played in six games. Has he shown the Eagles enough to make the cut this year?

WR Ifeanyi Momah: Another player brought to Philadelphia in the 2013 preseason only to be cut. Momah used the time last season to keep working and training. The diligence earned him a return invitation to the Birds for the 2014 offseason. The 6’7″ wideout’s size continues to make him an interesting option who may find an opportunity on special teams.

S Ed Reynolds: This year’s fifth-round draft pick has averaged only 15 snaps in the first three preseason games. That’s not much to go on. Malcolm Jenkins and Nate Allen have their starting spots reserved. Earl Wolff and Chris Maragos will be back. Where does this leave Reynolds? He’s going to have to show the Eagles coaches tonight a glimmer of something that indicates he’s a keeper.

CB Curtis Marsh: Marsh is another player familiar with the Eagles. Drafted by the Birds in 2011, he was released last year and signed by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2013. Back in green in 2014, he’s seen stud performances in practice overshadowed by disastrous in-game outings. Will he show something versus the Jets to show Philadelphia he’s worth another shot?

WR Damaris Johnson – His speed and agility caught everyone’s attention when he joined the Eagles in 2012, but tonight may be a wrap for Johnson on the Birds’ 53-man roster. If cut, don’t be surprised to see him return to Philadelphia’s practice squad.

Philadelphia Eagles Acquire LB Emmanuel Acho, Say Good-bye to RB Dion Lewis in Trade with Cleveland Browns

Monday, April 15th, 2013

New Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho

The Philadelphia Eagles had a  busy Thursday making changes to their roster, making one player-for-player trade and cutting four others.

Running back Dion Lewis, acquired in the 2011 draft by Philadelphia, was traded to the Cleveland Browns.  In exchange, the Birds acquired linebacker Emmanuel Acho in another move to prepare for the widely expected shift to a 3-4 scheme by Philadelphia.

Lewis’ loss is one the team could easily afford, as the former Pitt RB did not see much playing time in 2012.  He made a total of just 13 carries for 69 yards and 1 touchdown.

The Eagles elected to acquire Acho (6-1, 240) based on his collegiate achievements, as he saw no playing time last season after being drafted by the Browns and suffering a knee injury that placed him on Injured Reserve.  During his career at the University of Texas, the 22-year old linebacker appeared in 48 games, where he recorded 280 tackles, eight sacks, seven forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions.  Among his achievements, Acho started 13 games as a senior in 2011, garnering All-Big 12 first-team honors after leading the Longhorns with 131 tackles, while adding three sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble.

The following players weren’t so lucky as to find themselves traded to another team and instead were cut by the Eagles: LB Ryan Rau, LB Marcus Dowtin, WR Ron Johnson, and CB Chris Hawkins.
