NFL Preseason Mash Ups: NFC East Personas

Teams have personality.  Between the owner, the coach, the players, and the fans, a team develops certain behaviors.  As we approach the official beginning of the NFL season, WingFan would like to countdown to kickoff by walking you through each team and our assessment of their persona.  Let’s forget about draft picks, free agents, and statistics for a moment and just focus on each division, each team, and each personality.  Imagine Wendy Williams, Jay-Z, Hulk Hogan and Pam Anderson sitting down to dinner together – what a show right?  Well, that’s the NFC East right now.  Let’s take a look at what each team brings to the table:

Team: Philadelphia Eagles

Persona: Wendy Williams

WWWith no Super Bowl titles to speak of, the Eagles still manage to have one of the biggest personalities in the league, much like Wendy Williams, who has one of the biggest personalities in entertainment.  No Super Bowl wins doesn’t mean “no championships.”  The Eagles have actually won 3 NFL championships prior to the Super Bowl era.  Wendy Williams has never won an Oscar either, but she was named to the Radio Hall of Fame.  Radio – you know the media that existed before the television era?

The similarities continue.  The ex-shock jock’s most infamous moment was an interview with Whitney Houston where she hammered Houston on questions of drug use; ruthlessly digging into Whitney’s emotional wounds on-air.  Now, would you believe that the Philadelphia Eagles fans hammered Santa Clause with snow balls and booed him at the halftime of a December game in 1968?  Ruthless is, as ruthless does.  Williams actually broadcast her radio shows out of Philly’s own Power 99 FM – a station she helped take from #14 in local ratings to #2 during her time there.  Coincidentally, during the 2000s, former head coach Andy Reid took the Eagles all the way to the Super Bowl where they lost the big game and finished the season as the #2 team in the league.  The key to staying relevant for the Eagles and Williams seems to be their willingness to speak to the public about private matters.  Stories about Terrell Owens, Michael Vick, and Riley Cooper have littered the headlines in Philadelphia for almost a decade.  Williams shared stories on-air about her drug use, her breast implants, and even her miscarriages.

Recent years have been more about transformation for both Williams and the Eagles.  The Eagles are now the slimmed down version of Wendy Williams with the extra long weave.  New head coach, Chip Kelly, gave the Eagles offense a makeover last year, and drafted leaner players who have more speed and endurance than your average NFL athletes.  With the liposuction and new look, the Eagles surprised critics last year by winning the NFC East and making it to the playoffs.  Perhaps, this year, they will follow Wendy’s recent big screen appearances with some big game appearances of their own.

Team: Dallas Cowboys

Persona: Hulk Hogan

HHThe Dallas Cowboys are often dubbed “America’s Team” and Hulk Hogan used to enter the ring to a song titled “I am a Real American”.  These two deserve each other.  For decades these two entities have both entertained the American public.  The Cowboys won two Super Bowls in the 70’s and established a dynasty by winning three Super Bowls in the 90’s. Hogan carried professional wrestling from the late 70’s, through the 80’s, and into the late 90’s.  Around 1997, the two entities managed to fly off into obscurity, only to be revived every now and then by reality TV and good marketing.

Hogan made a comeback in the new millennium when he landed a reality show called “Hogan Knows Best”.  Meanwhile, the Cowboys became a featured team on HBO’s new reality show “Hard Knocks.”  The publicity kept them both relevant, even though they were still living in their pasts.  Each received the benefit of the doubt from media outlets, while their fans blindly routed for their success and celebrated their celebrity.  Recently, both have managed to let their status go to to their heads – literally and figuratively – as infidelity and scandal abound.

Hogan’s wife divorced him after she found out the Hulk was sleeping with his daughter’s BFF; while photos recently surfaced of Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, posing provocatively with younger woman.  In the wake of the NFL’s lenient two-game punishment for Ray Rice who hit his wife, Jones’ behavior isn’t exactly the kind of leadership the NFL might want on display.  In the coming weeks, we will see how things turn out for Jerry Jones, but one thing is clear, this is American Beauty.

Team: New York Giants

Persona: Jay-Z

JZYou might think this mash-up lacks creativity because New York is Jay-Z’s hometown, but that’s more of the icing than the cake.  The Giants are known for not just winning, but winning with a little bit of magic – some would call it luck.  Both the Giants and Jay-Z have legitimate titles on their resume: the Giants’ first Super Bowl win in 1986 was a 39-20 thrashing of the Denver Broncos, and Jay-Z’s debut album, “Reasonable Doubt”, is an undisputed hip-hop classic that most fans only started to appreciate years after it was released.

The Giants second, third, and fourth titles required some magic: a field goal miss from Buffalo’s Scott Norwood, a clutch catch off of David Tyree’s helmet on 4th down, and a perfectly placed Eli Manning pass to Mario Manningham with virtually no time left.  Jay-Z’s career has all of that: becoming one of the only links to Notorious BIG after his untimely passing, becoming the focal point in hip-hop’s “beef” era (an era where artists challenged each other song for song), and of course, becoming Beyonce’s fiancé (and husband) really didn’t hurt.  Some might call these occurrences “luck”.  But if you ask the Giants and Jay-Z, they’d say you “Can’t Knock the Hustle.”

Team: Washington Football Team

Persona: Pamela Anderson

PANo…this combination has nothing to do with a sex tape, but, then again, you never know what’s coming out of Washington these days.  With all due respect, the Washington Football Team won three Super Bowls – two in the 80’s and one in the 90’s.  Let’s call these the “Baywatch Days”.  The Washington Football Team were as pretty as Pamela Anderson bouncing down the beach in a little red bathing suit – they were all put together. Things started to change once Pam left Baywatch and the same thing happened in Washington when ownership changed from Jack Kent Cooke to Daniel Snyder.

Celebrity and branding became a larger part of the picture when both Pam and Dan started to tinker with their already established products.  Dan moved the team to the suburbs, while Pam moved from TV to movies.  Then the face lifts and plastic surgery ramped up for Pam and Dan.  Dan brought in celebrity coach after celebrity coach, celebrity athlete after celebrity athlete, and a carousel of quarterbacks that might finally stop with RGIII.  Same thing happened to Pam – her chest got more and more inflated, her face got more and more distorted, and her hair got more and more blonde.

Washington has only been to the playoffs four times in 22 years; and no one has featured Pam Anderson on the silver screen since Barb Wire (appearances aside).  It’s almost comedic. Washington just signed their 8th new head coach since the year 2000 and Robert Griffin (RGIII) is their 15th quarterback in the same time period.  If there were a team that deserved to sit in the hot seat and get roasted like Pam Anderson, it would be the Washington Football Team.  Their current name is a joke in and of itself.

Orioles Magic

It’s the beginning of August.  Many MLB teams have either made moves to improve their team or have thrown in the towel to begin preparing for the future. Oakland and Detroit have made significant improvements to their pitching staff. But the AL East leading Baltimore Orioles are riding the team that has brought them this far. They did acquire a relief pitcher from Boston, but for the most part they are relying on their guys.  As of this writing they sit in first place 2.5 games up on Toronto.  This is after Toronto won 7 games in a row.  New York has made several moves and they can’t seem to get close to Baltimore.  Just 4 years ago fans were happy just for a competitive team and now they sit at 61-47.

Baltimore has had an impressive season, besides dealing with a number of issues. They don’t have a true ace to lead their pitching staff.  While l personally like guys like Bud Norris and Miguel Gonzalez, you never get them confused with a Verlander, Price, or Lester.  lf they had one of those guys, their lead could be 10. To limit his innings, Kevin Gausman was yo-yoed between the show and the, minors even though he was one of the team’s most consistent performers.  Ubaldo Jimenez can’t seem to find the strike zone even though he is paid $50 million over the next 4 years to do so.  Tommy Hunter started off the season as the team’s closer but wasn’t very effective.  Insert Zach Britton to give them stability and 22 saves.  Buck Showalter is really amazing in how he has pushed all of the right buttons.

Offensively, how they have kept this team together is just unbelievable.  Chris Davis, who hit 53 home runs last year and finished 3rd in the AL MVP race, has only hit 17 home runs and is batting under .200.  Speaking of batting under or around .200, the O’s have 6 regular bats that are hitting in the .200 neighborhood.  Nelson Cruz has cooled off since his blistering start but still leads the team with 29 HRs and 75 RBI.  The only season-long consistent bats have been Hardy (even though he has not produced his usual power numbers), Jones, and Markakis.  They have had timely hitting all season and Camden Yards is buzzing at a time when many Baltimoreans are thinking “Purple and Black” instead of “Orange and Black”.

So, can they keep it up?  I say they can.  While some other teams have made moves to strengthen their rotation, it has come at a cost.  Baltimore has a special chemistry going in their dugout.  Smiles and hi-fives are the norm.  When a guy has a walk-off hit, you can expect a pie to the face.  They don’t quit nor do they give up easily.  12-4 is their record in extra-innings games.  Showalter keeps guys like Delmon Young and Steve Pierce engaged because they are needed, and they haven’t disappointed their skipper. Caleb Joseph and Nick Hundley have provided an adequate fill-in since Gold Glove catcher Matt Wieters went down with an elbow.  Darren O’Day and TJ McFarland have anchored a bullpen that is one of the best in baseball.  There is something magical happening and hopefully it leads this team to a World Series ring.

The Power of Weed

July 30th, 2014

by Joe Davis

Browns WR Josh Gordon (Image via eurweb.com)

Browns WR Josh Gordon
(Image via eurweb.com)

I don’t smoke weed.  I have only tried it once in my life so maybe I’m lost.  But can someone please explain to me why people are defending Josh Gordon?  He is a repeat violator of the NFL drug policy.  A policy that many former and current players have said that it’s very easy to pass. Josh Gordon has top 5 wide receiver talent.  He has bottom 5 sense.  He has been suspended from the NFL already.  He was kicked out of Baylor University for testing positive for marijuana in July of 2011, after being suspended for marijuana use during the 2010 season.  He transferred to Utah and sat out before entering the NFL thru the supplemental draft (some reports even say that he failed drug tests at Utah).  In 2013 he was suspended for the first two games of the season because he failed the drug test.  And now he is possibly gonna miss the entire season because he failed the drug test AGAIN! REALLY?!?!?!

(Image via HelpingHandsDispensary)

(Image via HelpingHandsDispensary)

I am not gonna argue about whether weed is or isn’t a drug.  I’m not even gonna debate the people that will talk about how marijuana is being decriminalized by many states in our great country.  Here is my point. If your job says don’t use a substance then don’t do it. ESPECIALLY if they test for it.  There are hundreds of thousands of people that also are subject to random drug tests; and they aren’t making $825,604 this year.  THAT IS $51,600.25 PER GAME. I make a little more than that in a year, but if my job said stop drinking coffee (something I drink 6 days a week), I would quit that shit in a heartbeat.  So I don’t get how someone would blow this opportunity to set themselves and their family up for a lifetime.  And to defend this man seems to be the problem.  He’s under contract.  He’s got a talent that many would kill for.  He has been given a 2nd, 3rd and now 4th chance.

In a famous skit on Chappelle Show, Rick James said “Cocaine is a helluva drug!”  But how powerful is weed?  Let’s not defend bad behavior.  Josh Gordon needs a wake-up call before he’s on the list of “could have been” or “should have been” players.  Josh Gordon needs one of his buddies to tell him that he can still be his boy but leave the “wacky tobaccy” alone.  Josh even needs to get away if his friends are smoking, since he said that his last positive test comes from second-hand smoke. I guess the power of weed is stronger than many will give it credit for.

Football: The Passion of the Fans

July 28th, 2014

by Joe Davis

Joe davis

(Image via ethnicsalarms.com)

(Image via ethnicsalarms.com)

It’s that time of year again, where optimism rings through this country from end to end. Whether it’s Washington DC or Washington State, Boston to Los Angeles, football fans believe that THIS is the year that their team will win it all. From little league to the NFL, you won’t find a fan that thinks that their team has no chance to Win a championship. This is why football is America’s game. In the NFL the new draft pick or free agent signing gives a team that finished in last place a feeling of hope. In college that new recruiting class or spring practice has the university believing that a conference championship is within grasp. Even at the high school level, the 15 year old kid that had a 6 inch growth spurt has the school with state championship dreams.

So how realistic are your teams’ chances in winning the ultimate prize? 3% chance if you are talking the NFL. 0.8% chance of winning the national championship. On lower levels the odds are even greater, where there may be over 2,000 schools in a state, all competing for a state title. And that’s what makes it great. Even with these amazing odds, we still believe that our team will win the championship THIS year (Full disclosure; I am a Dallas Cowboys fan and I still believe that if everything breaks right, we can win it all). The passion that we as football fans show for our sport is awesome.  Now I’m not here to compare with other sports (partly because it’s not even close); just to uplift my sport. From programs that are perennial contenders to that dark horse that has never been in a championship game, the passion is the same. THIS IS OUR YEAR. WE ARE GOING TO BEAT OUR RIVALS. WE WILL WIN IT ALL.

So as training camps continue to open in the next couple of weeks, our optimism may begin to fade. This dude has a season ending injury. This guy hasn’t progressed as much as we would like. Why isn’t the newer player as good as he was hyped? Many dreams will get crushed. Some will be delayed. And a few will be sidetracked. It makes the ultimate prize that much greater when we finally reach it. Enjoy your teams’ season for all of the ups and downs that are sure to follow.

Emmanuel Mudiay: Bucking the System

July 27th, 2014

by Jon Carroll

DrJonCarroll.final2

(Image via collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com)

(Image via collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com)

Emmanuel Mudiay made headlines this week by signing the richest contract ever for a high school graduate to go overseas and play basketball.  Despite reports that this decision was made to escape inquiries into his eligibility and amateur status by the NCAA, Mudiay has insisted that this was about taking care of his family.  He told SI.com “I was tired of seeing my mom struggle”.  With his decision to pursue the overseas route to prepare for the NBA, Mudiay joins a group that includes Brandon Jennings and Jeremy Tyler, both of whom are now in the NBA.  Mudiay’s decision is a rare one among elite high school prospects, even in the age of having to be nineteen to be draft eligible.  I hope that other elite high school athletes will give this avenue increasing consideration moving forward for reasons relating to the court and off.

On the court, there is the obvious issue of pay.  Mudiay is scheduled to be paid $1.2M to play for Guangdong of the China Basketball Association.  The athletic potential of young black men is commodified so early these days that coaches are forced to scout middle school games in order to stay on top.  With that commodification comes parasitic behavior which often leaves the athlete with little to no say over their future.  When it comes to college, the popular narrative is that elite prospects should be grateful for the $200-300k in scholarship that they could get over four years and forget about any other possible money they could make, not to mention the first class education.  I used to buy into this argument as an educator, but it crumbles when you recognize that the majority of the time, the athlete has long ago decided that they want to be a professional athlete.  A year of unwanted classes on a full scholarship pales in comparison to $1.2M and not having to check-in at the 9am lecture or 6pm study hall. If they have an opportunity to pursue their passion at eighteen and be paid for it, then why should they be stopped?  Olympic athletes, tennis and baseball players have been exercising this option for years.  Young, talented basketball players should feel no shame in doing the same.  By doing so, they have an opportunity to escape the identity shackles that American culture places on their worldview.

Going to China effectively gives Mudiay a one year fellowship in one of the leading civilizations in the world.  He has an opportunity to experience a completely different lifestyle.  This next year will have an impact on his life long after he’s done dribbling the ball.  Perhaps he learns the language, perhaps his notion of “blackness” evolves, maybe he makes business contacts that he can leverage when he does make it to the NBA as expected next year.  Yes, being seen numerous times on ESPN during the college season is a big stage, but so is becoming a star in China.  The exposure on national TV also means little if your game doesn’t develop and you can’t make it past the initial three-year rookie contract.

While Jennings, now a Detroit Piston, lamented that his time in Italy was not all fun and games, he acknowledged that he did mature.  It also sounds like he was humbled by not being treated like a star while playing for Lottomatica Virtus Roma.  A scout noted that he increased his capacity to play defense and that his draft stock had not been harmed.  At worst, Mudiay will be immersed in a professional culture that will prepare him for the rigors of the NBA and he won’t have to worry about being dissected at every turn the way Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker were this past year.  He’ll be doing this while controlling all facets of developing his brand, which is a key component to being a professional athlete today.

While the overall success of Jennings’ and Tyler’s careers can be questioned as neither has yet become an all-star, what cannot be denied is that they were not adversely impacted by their time overseas.  Ultimately it enabled them an opportunity to pursue their chosen professions at a high level and prepare them to play on the world’s most elite basketball stage.  Both matured on the court, and I would venture to guess they learned a lot about being an adult.  I expect the same for Mudiay and hope that as these examples continue to mount, that the prospect of going to foreign land will become a more tantalizing option for the nation’s elite high school basketball players who do not want to submit to the current NCAA policy.
