What’s Wrong With the Brooklyn Nets?

Nets

Is KG too old to be an impact player? Is Pierce past his prime? Is Kidd too inexperienced to coach the highest payroll in the NBA? Is Deron Williams overrated?

Well, unfortunately for the new Brooklyn franchise, the answer to all of these questions is a resounding YES.

This past off-season when this team was first slapped together, I listened to so many talking heads as they spoke about this patchwork group of individual stars. People would go on and on about how the Brooklyn Nets would challenge the Miami Heat in the East. They said that the experience and talent of the Brooklyn Nets would be too much for most teams in the East, including the Pacers!

I listened and listened, until finally I had had enough.

When will fans and so-called experts learn that there is no fast lane to success in the NBA, especially when you are dealing with a team whose nucleus consists of aging stars such as Garnett, Pierce, Joe Johnson, and Deron Williams. Yes, Deron Williams.

Although Deron is only 29 years old, already his game is beginning to regress, and the decline is apparent, particularly in his mental approach to the game. This year I have witnessed repeated mental lapses in his game, consisting of a general lack of desire on both ends of the court.

If Deron was expected to be what Rondo was to KG and Peirce in Boston, this team was doomed from the very beginning. Because what Rondo was in Boston, was a tireless worker on both ends of the court, which is something Williams has never been. And as the years are beginning to add up, this lack of work ethic is becoming more glaring game after game. Recently Kidd has called out his entire team in public, challenging their character and work ethic, and so far, there has been no response, particularly from Williams – the assumed leader on the floor.

If the Nets franchise had any ideas of KG and Peirce being the saviors, they are sadly mistaken. The magic they once were able to muster in Boston is long gone. The countless wars of the past have taken their toll. At this point, it is quite evident that the NBA legends have seen better days. The mileage on their incredible careers is starting to add up; and both are looking more like broken down used cars, unable to get out of 3rd gear on a nightly basis.

Quite frankly, Brooklyn will need an influx of young talent very soon if they are going to save this train wreck. Perhaps their first mistake was firing Avery Johnson; a proven and experienced coach who is used to handling aging stars. However, what’s done is done. Now this team will have to deal with the present. Fixing this mess will only take place in the off-season, as this current season will no doubt continue to drive in this slow lane to Nowhere, USA.  Hello Brooklyn.

Is Mark Cuban Really A MFFL?

Friday, January 25th, 2013

For those who don’t know what “MFFL” means: Mavs Fan For Life.  It was Mark Cuban’s, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, way of saying jump on board and I will take you to the promised land.  Well, I did.  In fact he made me a big believer, as soon as he took over a dismal team that was far from relevancy back in 2000.  He orchestrated a squad, led by future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki to two NBA Finals, winning one of them back in 2011.  2011 seems like a distant memory now, especially when Mark Cuban did the inevitable.
He dismantled an NBA championship team.  Not since Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls teams in the late ’90s have we seen a such thing.  Instead of challenging for a repeat, he decides to render the services of Tyson Chandler useless.  Chandler, who played one season with the Mavs, is the best center in Dallas Mavericks history.  Cuban had an opportunity to use the amnesty clause on Brendan Haywood in order to keep Chandler, instead he elected to watch Tyson leave for free agency without compensation.  Funny thing about it, he held onto Haywood the year after the championship, only to use the amnesty clause on him during this past offseason.  Other intriguing pieces to the championship were Caron Butler (who was injured but still valuable), J.J. Berea (who was the smallest Maverick but added valuable points off the bench), Deshawn Stevenson (who provided toughness and gritty defense), and Jason Terry (who was the heart and soul, a true Maverick, who walked and talked an NBA championship for the Dallas Mavericks).

Amnesty Clause: The NBA’s next collective bargaining agreement may include some form of “amnesty clause,” allowing teams to eliminate bad player contracts under certain conditions.

Is the sky falling?  MFFL, take a deep breath and ask yourself, “WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON AROUND HERE?”  Has Cuban lost his mind?  YES!  Okay, deep breath taken.  What are you going to do MARK CUBAN?
Mark Cuban has been preaching that the most important thing today is financial flexibility; his plan was to be a central figure in the 2012 trade market.  Since he has owned the team, he has never had flexibility to land free agents because money is always tied up.  The team is getting old and it’s the first time the Mavericks can possibly add a superstar to play alongside Dirk.  “Okay, you have my attention”, intrigued Mavs fan.  On paper, it sounds like a slam dunk.  Grabbing Deron Williams who is from the Dallas area and  somehow luring Dwight Howard.  Now I understand why we would get rid of Tyson, to get Dwight, makes sense to me.  Jason Kidd already said he would sign back because of his relationship with Deron Williams.  The 2012 free agency period was to be an upbeat time for #MAVSNATION, as we were to start the season better than ever.  Only one thing; Cuban didn’t land that big fish, didn’t close the deal on a superstar free agent.

Excuse me, doesn’t Mark Cuban star on the ABC hit show, Shark Tank?  On his show he is an investor looking to capitalize on small business owners’ inventions.  He is pretty savvy and the show demonstrates why he is a shrewd business man.  Is Shark Tank  the reason why Mark Cuban couldn’t land a top free agent this summer?  Marcel Mutoni from Slamonline wrote an article about the top free agent Deron Williams being pursued by the Dallas Mavericks this offseason.

According to Deron Williams, one of the biggest reasons he’s not a Dallas Maverick today, is that Mark Cuban didn’t show up for a meeting.
Cuban was busy taping his TV show “Shark Tank” in California, and sent Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle and GM Donnie Nelson to meet with the free agent superstar point guard.
This did not sit well with D-Will, who felt that his questions about the direction Dallas was taking were left largely unanswered.

Deron Williams fell through and stayed with the Brooklyn Nets.  The Orlando Magic gave Dwight Howard up for a cup of coffee to the LA Lakers.  The Mavericks couldn’t even keep old man Kidd, who bolted to the Knicks to play with former teammate Tyson Chandler.  Flexibility; now that’s funny.  The Dallas Mavericks have all this flexibility in the world and can’t sign a single superstar to play with Dirk.  The only option for the 2012-13 season was to sign journeymen (Elton Brand, Chris Kaman, O.J Mayo, Dahntay Jones, and Darren Collison) to one year contracts.  As a MFFL, I am so ecstatic!  Watching a team with a record of 18-24 each night.  This is what the MFFL had envisioned for our big free agent season.  Just two years removed since the Dallas Mavericks’ fans witnessed their first NBA championship and now their beloved team can’t even compete for the 8th seed in the Western Conference.  So Mr. Cuban, why are you being so brass, and telling the basketball world you are ready to deal for players now?  According to Brad Townsend, a reporter for the Dallasnews.com, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban declared that there was a 100-percent chance that the Mavericks will try to make a trade before the Feb. 21 trade deadline.  Monday, Cuban practically stated his intentions in a Jimmy Johnson-esque three-inch headline, saying,

“We’re letting everybody know the Bank of Cuban’s open.  And if it’s the right deal, we don’t mind taking back money.  But we’re not going to do a trade just to do a trade.  It’s got to be worthwhile.”

Only one problem Mark Cuban… no one wants to come to Dallas.

Dwyane Wade For Sale!

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

By Brandon McConnell

For Sale

The Miami Heat was formed in the summer of 2010 with the “Big 3” that consists of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh.  Each one was a star before they joined forces but none of them, in their current situation, were in a position to win an NBA Championship.  Not even Dwyane Wade who had already won a championship with the Heat.
This team is like a science project.  The CONTROL was each player on their original team by themselves, where each player would not become champions before joining forces.  The HYPOTHESIS, is LeBron James saying, “not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7 championships”.  After one year, we would have to start coming to the conclusion that this project just might not validate the HYPOTHESIS of a return in championships.
In any sport, a successful team wins championships due to the chemistry they display throughout the year.  It is clear that LeBron James and Dwyane Wade cannot play at their maximum ability on the same team.  They are both the same player and take up each other’s space.  It would be like Dwight Howard and Shaq starting on the same team.  So, what is the answer?  Let’s dissect the situation.  When the Miami Heat play without Lebron James, they are a .500 team with a record of 5-5.  When the Miami Heat play without Dwyane Wade, they are 9-1 with a .900 winning percentage.  I have to come to the conclusion that the Miami Heat are a more effective team without Dwyane Wade.
So, let’s look at the Miami Heat’s weaknesses.  We can all come to the conclusion that they need help at the point guard and center positions.  Since Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum are the only good centers in the league, let us direct our attention to the point guard position.  The best point guard available is Deron Williams who will be a free agent at the end of this year and has no intentions on staying in New Jersey.  Why don’t we play GM Pat Riley for a second.  Let’s trade Dwyane Wade to the New Jersey Nets for Deron Williams.  Since Dwyane has a couple of years left on his contract, New Jersey would take him in a heartbeat since they could draw more players to play with Wade.  New Jersey could sign and trade Deron Williams so that Miami would have him under contract.  Check out my proposed Miami Heat starting five.
PG Deron Williams
SG LeBron James
SF Shane Battier
PF Chris Bosh
C   Joel Anthony
That starting five would be more effective than the current Miami starting five due to better chemistry with Deron Williams adding his eight assists per game.  A great point guard makes the game easy for everyone.  Just ask Kareem, Worthy, Scott, and Cooper.
In conclusion, the Miami Heat can continue being one of the most entertaining teams in the league, or start addressing the chemistry problems and become a DYNASTY.

The Dwight Howard Story: Superman Has Left the Building…or Maybe Not?

Monday, March 19th, 2012

By Brandon McConnell

The big story around this year’s NBA season has been what team will Dwight Howard play for in the future.  At the beginning of the year, Dwight told the Orlando Magic’s executives that he would like to be traded to the Lakers, Nets, or Mavericks.  The Orlando Magic listened to trade offers the first half of the season, turning them all down hoping Dwight would change his mind and stay with the team.  In the words of Jesse Jackson,  they were “keeping hope alive”.

The big rumor surfacing throughout the league was Dwight opting out of his deal and joining Deron Williams in New Jersey.  This was the obvious plan for the last three months.  Orlando even believed this was the plan since Dwight would not accept a max contract with them that would pay him $109 million dollars.

As the trade deadline approached, you heard a new rumor on Dwight every hour of the day.  Dwight wants to go to the Lakers.  Dwight is going to team up with Derick Rose in Chicago since they are both with Team Adidas.  Dwight is going to New Jersey with “D-Will”.  You never heard Dwight wanting to stay in Orlando.  He even told management that he was not going to stay.

So Orlando management starting fielding offers from the league to seek the best deal they could get for Dwight Howard.  In the 11th hour, Dwight Howard developed a conscience and decided to opt-in to one more year with the Orlando Magic for $19 million because he felt like he owed his teammates and the fans of Orlando since he showed such a lack of loyalty throughout the season.  What is he thinking?  Dwight Howard is that guy who breaks up with his girlfriend and asks her back at the end of the day because he started feeling bad.

People always want to give LeBron a hard time, even myself, but one thing I can respect about LeBron is he did exactly what he wanted to do and didn’t give a damn what anyone else thought.  By Dwight staying one more year for $19 million dollars, he risks being hurt and getting paid a whole lot less next summer.  If he wanted to stay in Orlando, in the words of DMX in Belly, “GET THE  MONEY YO”.  He could have signed a max deal for $109 million dollars.  If he is staying one more year to be nice to the people of Orlando, that is dumb since you will be a free agent next year and have to go through the same media circus again.

In concluding, Dwight, if you want be the “MAN OF STEEL”, start first by trying to be a MAN!

Smelling Like a Rose…A Derrick Rose

ROY to MVP?

I just want to take a minute to go the route of my Homie & co-host Aquil Bayyan and offer a public apology to one Mr. Derrick Rose.  Prior to, during, and shortly thereafter the 2008 NBA draft, I loudly proclaimed that Mike Beasley should have been the #1 pick instead of the young Mr. Rose.  I saw Rose’s athletic upside in his lone season at the University of Memphis but never in a million years thought he could also become a prototypical point guard on top of that.  Less than 3 years after draft day, he is averaging 24.5 points, 8.1 assists,  and 4.3 rebounds per game, he’s in the midst of a VERY legitimate MVP campaign, and though I don’t give him this title quite yet, he is arguably the best point guard in the NBA (I personally still reserve that title for Deron Williams).

Now hindsight is always 20/20 and I never actually said he wouldn’t be good, but I was unaware of the intangibles that this youngster possesses that sets him apart from the “pretender” category.  His desire to be great is extremely evident in both his work ethic and his level of what seems to be GENUINE humility.  When he came into the league, his jumpshot had a body-cast on it.  He, unlike Raon Rondo (yeah I said Raon…I left the J out on purpose…think about it for a minute) has put in tireless work to become a better shooter…and a better shot has disallowed people to continue to play off of him and limit his athleticism by forcing him to shoot.  Let’s put this into perspective…he’s no Ray Allen, but he has arrived at a point where you must respect his jumper, leaving defenders at his mercy and vulnerable to ape-like highlight reels and poster shots (yeah I said ape-like…get over it…it’s a compliment).  He has also become a much better passer and playmaker than I’d expected.

So ball on young Mr. Rose and continue to prove all the doubters wrong…if you still have any.  This is one sports analyst that you’ve won over.  Now go collect your MVP trophy and take a bow.

“White Moses” or “The Mulatto Intercontinental Champion”: Kevin Love vs Blake Griffin

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Kevin Love a.k.a. “White Moses” and Blake Griffin a.k.a. “The Mulatto Intercontinental Champion” are both having all-star caliber years but both may not make the all-star game. If you the fan had your choice; what would it be? Love is averaging 22 ppg and 16 reb while Griffin is averaging 23 ppg and 13 reb and at least 2 highlights per week that make you wonder if he is really human or was he created by a scientist off the Fox show Fringe.

I know the all-star game is supposed to be an exhibition and Blake is the more exciting player but, “White Moses” puts up 30’s and 20’s like most big men (No Mendenhall) put up 20’s and 10’s. Many will say that the team’s record should matter but let’s be honest; BOTH TEAMS STINK! Asking who is a better team is like asking what smells worst trash or garbage.

This will be a tough choice. I think both players are playing great. I appreciate the way that Kevin Love plays but I would also be excited to watch Griffin play with Deron Williams a.k.a. “The Mulatto Heavyweight Champion”. I hope they both make it but if it comes down to one or the other it would be an impossible decision for me.

What are your thoughts? If only one can go, who should it be?
