10.  New York Yankees, SS, Derek Jeter

Remember the days of A-Rod, Jeter, and Nomar Garciaparra headlining the most exciting position in the infield?  They took the torch from superstars like Ozzie Smith and Cal Ripken Jr.  Well, times have changed.  A-Rod, like Ripken went to third (and has faded fast) and Nomar has been gone for years.  But there is no way we could leave off Derek Jeter – a 13-time All-Star, five-time Gold Glove winner, and five-time World Series Champion, who by the way had 216 hits last season.  Each time Derek connects for a base hit, we are witnessing history, as he is the only active player in the Major Leagues that has over 3,000 hits.  Currently he is 11th all-time and barring a setback of sort he should be sitting at #6 on the MLB all-time hit list at the end of the season.  The fractured ankle is behind him and the love handles are a distant memory, so expect another sensational season.  Jeter is very motivated to have a better year than last as he is still chasing that illustrious sixth championship ring (sounds like we are talking about Kobe).  Derek will never hit for power but he is the guy you want up at the plate in crunch time.  Jeter delivered as a young man and though father time may have set in, he will still find a way.

2013 Predictions .307BA 7HR 50RBI.362OPB.

9. Baltimore Orioles, SS, JJ Hardy

JJ just received his first Gold Glove Award last season but he didn’t match the same intensity at the plate.  His batting average dipped into the .230s and he had a career high in strikeouts with 106.

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter puts it bluntly.  He wants to move J.J. Hardy out of the second spot in the lineup.  Can you blame Buck?  J.J. is still one of the better power hitting shortstops in the Majors, as he has hit 52HRs in the past two seasons.  Hardy has been part of offseason trade rumors with the Detroit Tigers.  If you are in a fantasy league, you may want to keep your eye on this one just in case a trade does happen.  The Tigers are loaded on offense and if he is surrounded by better players, then Hardy, who is known for his streakiness, could certainly have a productive year.
2013 Prediction .265BA 27HR 81RBI .310OBP .407SLG

8.  Texas Rangers, SS, Elvis Andrus

If only this kid could do a cartwheel followed by a flip; we would have our reincarnation of Ozzie Smith.  Well not true, Ozzie was a switch-hitter but in the field my man Elvis is a wizard in his own right.  This 2X All-Star has completed his fourth season and is a fixture at the shortstop position for the Texas Rangers.  Since being called up, he has been one of the better clutch hitters in baseball, as he shows the toughness of an Omar Vizquel in the field and each year becoming a difficult out at the plate.  Andrus will not provide any power from the plate, in fact shame on you pitcher for even allowing him to go yard on you, as he has 14 career home runs in his first four seasons.  Elvis is a sure bet to bat in the first two spots in the lineup and wreak havoc on the bases.
2013 Predictions .302BA 1HR 57RBI 28SB .355OBP .378SLG

7.  Philadelphia Phillies, SS, Jimmy Rollins

Rollins is the first NL MVP (2007) on the Top 10 list.  Yes, he is decorated – 3-time All-Star, 4 time Gold Glove winner, a member of the 30/30 club, and a World Champion.  He is now entering year number 14 and still holds his rightful place at the leadoff spot where he continues to provide some power and speed at the age of 33.  Gone are the days of 20 triples in a season, but he can still place the ball all over the park.  He was able to steal 30 out of 35 bases last season, so he can still display the speed too.  He was able to manage 23 dingers last year, but my concern with him would be his batting average and on base percentage.  It seems he was going for the fences a lot more.  Even a veteran must be reminded that we need you on base to start things off.
2013 Predictions .264BA 21HR 60RBI .333OBP .404SLG

6. Cleveland Indians, SS, Asdrubal Cabrera

Asdrubal Cabrera

Asdrubal Cabrera is a bright star for the Cleveland Indians.  Though he had a dismal second half last season, the Indians are expecting him to bounce back to his 2011 numbers.  Asdrubal, a switch-hitter, will bat second in the lineup this season and will hope to provide plenty of offense to a mediocre Cleveland team.  With newly acquired Michael Bourne leading things off and Jason Kipnis providing protection in the three hole, there should be plenty of opportunities for Asdrubal at the plate.

2013 Prediction .278BA 19HR 87RBI .335OBP .421SLG

5.  Washington Nationals, SS, Ian Desmond

Ian Desmond was just as big a surprise as the team he plays for, the Washington Nationals.  What a difference a year makes, as Desmond’s numbers from 2011 to last season could warrant him Most Improved Player.  In 2011 he had a .253BA 8HR 49RBI; in 2012 he had a .292BA 25HR 73RBI in 24 fewer games.  Ian’s speed and power allowed him to be a member of the 20/20 club last year.  He had a phenomenal season that landed him his first All-Star appearance and Silver Slugger Award.  There is no doubt the talent Ian has displayed but the question is for this season, will he improve on last years numbers?

2013 Predictions .287BA 24HR 81RBI 28SB .340OBP 501SLG

4.  Chicago Cubs, SS, Starlin Castro

The Chicago Cubs are looking at their rising star, Starlin Castro, and saying it’s time to take the kid gloves off.  After three full seasons in the big leagues, we have seen flashes of an elite shortstop; but at times in his young career, he can be a bit aloof.  Castro can play at the professional level as he has already record his second All-Star appearance at the age of 23; but for him to reach superstar level he needs to focus for the entire 162 games.  The only flaw in Castro’s game is on defense, as he led the NL in errors with 29.  On offense, his batting average has been around .300, he is hitting a high number of triples with 21 in the last two seasons.
2013 Predictions .301BA 14HR 77RBI 23SB .339OBP .440SLG

3.  Toronto Blue Jays, SS, Jose Reyes

I can arguably say that Jose Reyes is the first DIVA on the top 10 list.  Anybody that removes himself out of the lineup to secure a batting title is considered a Diva.  Good thing he plays the game with a lot of swagger, and in my opinion he is the best lead-off hitter in all of  baseball.  This 4-time All-Star has recently won a batting crown (.337) in 2011, usually leads the Majors with double-digit triple numbers, and always among the top of the stolen base list.  Reyes had just become the newest member of the $100 million club by committing to the Miami Marlins last season; unfortunately it was short-lived as the team, which had high expectations, flopped and the Marlins ended up conducting a fire sale that sent Reyes to his new home in Toronto.  Becoming a Blue Jay could be a blessing in disguise, as on paper they may have the best talent in the American League East.  In order for a successful season in Toronto, Jose must get on base, swipe bases, stay healthy, and surely he will cross home plate just plenty with Encarncaion and Bautista batting behind him.
2013 Predictions .304BA 9HR 51RBI 40SB .350OBP .422SLG

2.  Los Angeles Dodgers, SS, Hanley Ramirez

Diva?  The former Rookie Of The Year, 3-time All-Star, Hanley Ramirez is the epitome of DIVASTYLE!  Anyone who scowls about having to change position for the betterment of the team is a Diva.  Maybe pouting was his plan all along as he made things so miserable in Miami that the Marlins traded him midseason to the Los Angeles Dodgers.  With all the acquisitions that the Dodgers made in the past year, LA is looking like the sexy team to play for this season.  Their line-up is star-studded and has Ramirez projected to bat 5th in the order.  Expect to see a happier Hanley, who has a chance to surpass last year’s power numbers of 24HR and 92RBI.  He no longer has to be the one to carry a team on his back.  Ramirez will be able to supply both speed and power in the middle of the lineup, which could potentially get him close to another 30/30 season.
2013 Predictions .284BA 27HR 96RBI 31SB.332OBP.447SLG

1.  Colorado Rockies, SS, Troy Tulowitzki

The guy who can take the shortstop position to new heights would be no one other than Mr. Troy Tulowitzki.  Just two seasons ago this dynamic young superstar hit .302BA with 32HR and 105RBI in just 143 games.  He has become a main draw in Colorado, when he plays.  Troy has recently been getting a stigma of being an injury prone player.  In the last three seasons he has played 122, 143 and 47 games, respectively.  Last season was cut short after having season ending surgery on his left groin.  When Troy is available to play, he is as dominant of a hitter as you will find in baseball.  Look for Tulowitzki to have a heathier campaign,  focusing on getting back to his All-Star and Gold Glove form.

2013 Predictions .305BA 28HR.100RBI.388OBP.521SLG

Players who could easily crash the party.

Ben Zobrist, 2B/SS/OF, Tampa Bay Rays
Zobrist has been a valuable fantasy commodity for the past few years due to his eclcetic tool set that offers speed, power, and position versatility. He qualifies at shortstop for fantasy, though he is expected to start in right field. He’s delivered a OPS over .820 in four of his last five seasons with over 70 RBI each of the last four seasons (and over 90 in two of those seasons). In his age 31 season, don’t expect a major uptick, but more of the same from the versatile Zobrist.                      2013 Predictions .268BA 20HR 85RBI 19SB .368OBP

 Martin Prado, 2B/SS/OF, Arizona Diamondbacks

After another strong season with Atlanta, Martin Prado was sent to Arizona as a part of the Justin Upton trade where he’ll start at third base, but maintain his shortstop eligibility for fantasy purposes. He moves to a more hitter friendly ballpark and is still only 29. Another one of his well-rounded seasons with a great average, a little pop, and a little speed should be expected.  2013 Predictions .297BA 11HR 71RBI 19SB.348OBP.430SLG

The American League’s All-Time Franchise Players

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

by LeRoy McConnell III

There are 14 American League Baseball teams across country.  Each team has at least one significant individual that is the consummate ballplayer who represents everything the franchise is about.  As we take a look at each team, which ballplayer shows to be the most influential player to have donned a uniform for that franchise?  Some teams will have an obvious pick chosen to represent their team.  What about the teams that were successful in multiple eras?  We can only choose one player for each team that deserves the title “Mr. Baseball”.

American League East

Mr. Baltimore Oriole is  Frank Robinson

This selection is not as easy as it sounds when you have the likes of Eddie Murray, Jim Palmer, Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson.  I know how much of darlings Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson are, but Frank Robinson is  Mr. Baltimore Oriole.  The 1966 MVP, Triple Crown winner, and 2-time World Series champion (’66,’70).  He was also the manager for 4 seasons for the Baltimore Orioles.  Robinson’s numbers as an Oriole were .300BA/882H/179HR/545RBI/.543SLG/.944OPS in 6 seasons.

Mr. Boston Redsox is Ted Williams

With the prosperous history of the Boston Red Sox, the franchise had a wealth of talent that come to mind such    as Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens,  Jimmie Fox, Pedro Martinez, and Carl Yastrzemski.  To me, Mr. Boston Redsox has to be “Teddy Ballgame”.  Though he was a difficult soul to love in his playing days in Boston,  it’s  impossible to leave out the last man to hit .406, twice a triple crown winner, and twice MVP of the league.  Ted Williams’ numbers as a Red Sox were .344BA/2654H/521HR/1839RBI/.639SLG/1.116OPS in 21 seasons.

Mr. New York Yankee is Derek Jeter

The most difficult team to choose by far.  I will not include Babe Ruth because he is labeled as the first professional baseball player recognized by all.  There are plenty more Yankees such as Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, , Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, and Mariano Rivera.  When it’s all said and done, number 2 is on pace to being the greatest Yankee of all-time.  He learned a lot from the Yankee tradition as he is a winner, he is the modern-day Joe DiMaggio, and he is the only Yankee to eclipse the 3000 hit list (hard to believe).  It’s amazing that he has been able to keep a squeaky clean image in the Big Apple.   A role model for all.  Mr. New York Yankees belongs to Derek Jeter.  Jeter’s numbers as a Yankees so far are .313BA/3265H/.382OBP/.831OPS/347SB

Mr. Tampa Bay Ray is Carl Crawford

Is it possible that a team that hasn’t been in existence 15 years have a Mr. Tampa Bay Ray?  The Rays have only been relevant the last four years and maybe it’s because of Evan Longoria and David Price.  I don’t think either one has enough skins on the wall to warrant the title as of yet.  There is one man who does represent the standard as he leads the franchise in hits, runs, and stolen bases.  Mr. Tampa Bay Ray is Carl Crawford.  Crawford’s numbers as a Tampa Bay Ray were 296BA/1480H/103 3B/432SB in 9 seasons.

Mr. Toronto Blue Jay is Dave Stieb

Off the top of my head it probably should be Joe Carter because of his heroics in the 1993 World Series when he hit a walk-off, 3 run homer against the Phillies’ Mitch Williams, to end the series.  What about other players such as Roberto Alomar, George Bell, Carlos Delgado, Roy Halladay, and Jimmy Key.  I believe Mr. Toronto Blue Jay goes to Dave Stieb, by a small margin over Roy Halladay.  As a Blue Jay, Dave Stieb won 175G/30SHO/103CG/3.44ERA/1658SO in 16 seasons.

American League Central

Mr. Chicago White Sox is Frank Thomas

I can do a list of White Sox players but none would be worthier than the “Big Hurt”.  Mr. Chicago White Sox is Frank Thomas.   Frank Thomas burst onto the scene putting up Hall of Fame numbers, standing at 6’5 280lbs, an intimidating force but really the opposite.  Other White Sox in consideration were Luke Appling, Paul Konerko, and Ted Lyons.  Frank Thomas’ numbers as a White Sox were .307BA/2136H/448HR/1465RBI/1466BB/.427OBP/.568SLG/.995OPS

Mr. Cleveland Indian is Bob Feller

If we were speaking modern-day only, then Jim Thome would win my vote because he is truly the most popular Indian alive but there is a war hero the city of Cleveland loves a little bit more.  Mr. Cleveland Indian is Bob Feller.  He was a 20 game winner in his teenage years, the hardest throwing pitcher before we ever heard the name Nolan Ryan.  He remains the Indians’ all-time leader in shutouts and strikeouts.  Other considerations were Albert Belle, Tris Speaker and Jim Thome.  As an Indian, Bob Feller won 266G/44SHO/279CG/3.25ERA/2581SO in 18 seasons.  Feller missed 3 prime season due to war.

Mr. Detroit Tiger is Ty Cobb

Numbers never lie!  Have you ever heard of a major league hitter knocking in 1805 rbi for a franchise by only hitting 111 home runs?  Who says you have to be a power hitter?  It does help to have 3900 hits and a lifetime batting average of .368 as a Detroit Tiger.  Mr. Detroit Tiger goes to Tyrus Cobb.  I wonder if the Detroit Tigers franchise is the only organization with two members with at least 3000 hits with one team.  The other man is Al Kaline.  Hank Greenberg is not to shabby himself!  Ty also scored over 2088 R/1148BB/869SB/.434OBP/.516SLG/.945OPS in 22 seasons with Detroit.

Mr. Kansas City Royal is George Brett

One name and one name only.  George Brett is Mr. Kansas City Royal.  20 years in a Royals uniform, the ultimate professional who did nothing but bring respectability to the Royals organization.  When he retired, the Royals organization simply died.  In 1980, Brett made a run at .400 batting .390.  He is the only major league player to win a batting title in three different decades.  Who is going to tell George Brett he isn’t Mr. Royal?  Have you seen his reaction during the pine tar incident!  Honorable mention belongs to Hal McCrae and Frank White.  George Brett’s numbers as a Royal were .305BA/3154H/317HR/1591RBI/.369OBP/.487SLG/.857OPS in 20 seasons in Kansas City.

Mr. Minnesota Twin is Kirby Puckett

A short, chubby man with a very large stick comes to mind.  This individual was the heart and soul of the only two World Series championships in team history.  Did I say he was short?  He made some incredible plays with the bat and the glove.  Standing at 5’8″, this individual definitely played bigger than anyone in his era.  Mr. Minnesota Twin goes to Kirby Puckett.  Had my eye on Bert Blyleven, Rod Carew, Kent Hrbek, Harmon Killebrew, and Tony Oliva.  Kirby Puckett’s numbers as a Twin were .318BA/2304H/.360OBP/.477SLG/.837OPS in 12 seasons in Minnesota.  Kirby’s career was cut short due to glaucoma.  Several surgeries occurred but vision was never restored.

American League West

Mr. Los Angeles Angel is Nolan Ryan

One of the biggest mistakes in the Angels history was letting this man become a free agent.  All he did in an Angels uniform was strike people out.  Hint, hint!  Mr. Los Angeles Angel goes to Nolan Ryan.  Someone explain to me how a dominant pitcher who strikes out 383 batters and finishes second in the Cy Young race was allowed to leave.  Other considerations were Garrett Anderson, Rod Carew, Chuck Finley, and Tim Salmon.  Nolan Ryan won 138W/156CG/40SHO/3.07ERA/2416SO/1.294WHIP in 8 seasons as an Angels.

Mr. Oakland A’s is Rickey Henderson

Oakland A’s has had a substantial amount of superstars from the likes of Vida Blue, Jose Canseco, Dennis Eckersley, Jim “Catfish” Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Mark McGwire, and Dave Stewart.  There was a guy who named himself “The Greatest”!  Mr. Oakland A’s goes to Rickey Henderson, who without a doubt believes he is “The Greatest”!  I can’t think of another ballplayer that beats to a crazy drum like Henderson.  He will find a way to get on base, swipe second to get in scoring position, and cross home plate to add to his run total.  He was one of the most individual stat-counting ballplayers the game has ever seen.  I guess we must take into account that he may have known what he was talking about.  I guess!  Rickey Henderson’s numbers as an Oakland A’s were.288BA/1768H/1227BB/1270R/867SB/.409OBP/.839OPS in 14 seasons.

Mr. Seattle Mariner is Edgar Martinez

The Seattle Mariners hit the jackpot twice raising two teenage ball players into perennial superstars.  Unfortunately they couldn’t keep either one in a Mariners uniform.  The stories of Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. speak for themselves.  Both players were bigwigs in their time in Seattle.  No one will ever match the human highlights Griffey displayed running down fly balls and that sweet swing…priceless.  A-Rod, innocent at the time, putting up numbers at the shortstop position that no one in history before or since has done.  Two beloved players but not the most important Mariners.  First of all, this individual’s bat was just as important as those superstars mentioned, and unlike them, he never chased the mighty dollar of free agency.  Mr. Seattle Mariner is Edgar Martinez.  Other considerations are Jay Buhner, Randy Johnson, and Ichiro Suzuki.  Edgar Martinez’ numbers were.318BA/2247H/309HR/1261RBI/.418OBP/.515SLG/.933OPS in 18 seasons.

Mr. Texas Ranger is Nolan Ryan

If Chuck Norris a.k.a “Walker Texas Ranger”  had any say in the voting he would choose himself as Mr. Texas Ranger.  Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez was the heartbeat for the Texas Rangers for 13 years and is still a fan favorite.  Michael Young was handed the torch when “Pudge” left Texas and has blossomed into the captain of the team.  However, once again Mr. Texas Ranger without saying is Nolan Ryan.  Though he only played 5 seasons in a Ranger uniform, he was known for his milestones.  In a Ranger uniform he won his 300th game, he threw his 5000th strikeout, and he pitched his sixth and seventh no-hitters.  Nolan Ryan is Mr. Texas Ranger because he saved a franchise that was in bankruptcy.  Since he took over management and now part-owner, the Texas Rangers have been part of the last two World Series (2010,2011) and currently one of the best teams in the Majors.  Their farm system is among the best in baseball, all because of Mr. Texas Rangers Nolan Ryan.  Other considerations were Juan Gonzalez, Josh Hamilton, Charlie Hough, and Rafeal Palmeiro.

Derek Jeter’s 3000th Hit: Nobody’s Perfect

Monday, July 18th, 2011

by Jimmy Williams

So Derek Jeter has now hit for over 3,000 hits and has added to his legacy of being an all-time great baseball player. People are now arguing about where he stands in terms of Yankee greats.  I don’t know where he stands historically as a Yankee because I haven’t put any thought into it, and unlike most people I have the ability to form my own opinion.

Over his career, Jeter has been a great player who has stayed out of trouble, and has done nothing but play the game the right way.  He is also one of the most clutch athletes I have ever seen.  I don’t believe in praising people for doing what they should do, like staying out of prison, but with athletes being arrested on what seems like a daily basis, I feel like those who stay out of trouble like Jeter has, deserve credit.  This leads me to my problem with Derek Jeter.  He is a Yankee.  Being a Phillies fan, I cannot admire nor like a Yankee.  Yet I have been having a hard time finding anything to dislike about Jeter.  He recently sat out of the All-Star Game and I thought, “okay, here is my reason”.  But honestly I had no problem with him doing this.  All of the all-star games are a joke at this point but that is for a later discussion.  It really is difficult to dislike a guy who plays the game extremely well, has just as many hits with models & actresses as he does on the diamond, has made a boat-load of money, and is philanthropic.

But after a couple days of pondering about what I can say bad about Jeter, I finally found something.  Mr. Jeter…your cologne distributed through Avon STINKS!  That’s right…it is horrible and cheap.  It smells like a combination of polar bear urine and bone marrow from a dead alley cat.  How could you associate yourself with a fragrance as repugnant as that?  Your fragrance is called “Driven” but it smells more like an old Chevy driven by four homeless men and a dead, diabetic pig.

So now Mr. Jeter, I can throw you in the same boat as most Yankees I hate, like “A-Roid”, because you don’t have enough sense to smell a fragrance before you put your name on it.  So there you have it.  Although it sounds like I am dissing you in a weird way, I am actually giving you credit because that is the only thing I can find to make me dislike you.  But you are a Yankee, so FOH and go play in traffic!!

I’m Nice!!!

Jimmy Williams
